London, England: Thames & Hudson, 1977. paperback. Good. 8x5x0. Moderate wear and creasing to covers, light soiling, chipping and sticker remnants on covers, internally clean. Yaacov Agam exhibited his earliest kinetic sculptures in 1953 at the Galerie Craven in Paris. In this, probably the first exhibition anywhere to be devoted strictly to kinetic art, he was represented with 45 pieces: it was like a catalogue of the possibilities open to this new direction in art. In 1955 he took part, with Calder, Duchamp, Vasarely and others, in the important exhibition at the Denise Rene Gallery and during the 1960s his work was included in all the major exhibitions of kinetic art. Born in 1928, the son of a rabbi, Agam was imprisoned by the English as a member of the Israeli resistance. Thrown among men of all ages and backgrounds, he began to realize that art, if it is ever to reach a wide audience, must find a new and dynamic language. Agam has succeeded in overcoming the limits of traditional…

University of Wisconsin Press, 2005-01-03. hardcover. Very Good. 6x0x9. Pictorial boards have minor shelf wear, no dust jacket as issued, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. Yahweh versus Yahweh is a vivid description of how the founding myths of Judaism have conditioned Jewish expectations from history. Jay L. Gonen unveils the collective psychology that underlies Jewish psychohistory. The enigmatic God of Gonenâs study brings to the Jewish people periods of construction and bounty but also periods of destruction and hopelessness. This duality, according to the Gonen, runs throughout Jewish lore, literature, morality, the Kabbala, and Hassidism. It serves as the unifying factor in Jewish historyâas it informed and influenced the establishment of the State of Israel, the history and future of Zionism, the debate over the Holocaust, the belief in the coming of the Messiah, and the current conflict in the Middle East.Gonen is at his best when portraying the…

Boards and jacket are in near fine condition, internally clean. Yinka Shonibare MBE (b. 1962), a British artist of Nigerian descent, is best known for his dramatic tableaux of life-size, headless mannequins, gorgeously dressed in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century costumes made from elaborately patterned textiles popular in Africa. Shonibare matches the staggering, opulent beauty of his art with erudition and wit: exploring identity and authenticity, he taps art historical tradition and intellectual history in sly, provocative works that examine class, race, gender, and colonialism. Published to accompany an exhibition organized by the Barnes Foundation, Yinka Shonibare MBE: Magic Ladders presents major works by the artist, including his latest commission. Dr. Albert C. Barnes, the pharmaceutical entrepreneur who…

Description:
Arcadia Publishing, 1999-05-26. Paperback. Very Good. 6x0x9. Minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. Until hard surface, all-weather thoroughfares were constructed and private automobiles became numerous, residents of York County depended on trolleys for local transportation. Many people commuted regularly to and from work on the electric cars, which also carried children to school from September through June. In the winter, when streets, roads, and highways were buried under deep drifts, powerful snowplows swiftly cleared the street railway tracks after severe storms so the trolleys could get through. Maineâs York County boasted more than 100 miles of trolley lines from 1907 through 1922. The World War I years were difficult for street railways throughout the United States. Soon after the conflict ended, automobiles began rolling off the assembly lines at progressively more attractive prices. As the nation entered the âRoaring…
