The national poet of Scotland, Burns gave "new life to several Scottish stanza forms, making them crucial to the national spirit of his poetry" (ODNB). James Logie Robertson (1846–1922) was an accomplished literary scholar and author, who also wrote under the pseudonym of "Hugh Haliburton". He is considered "an important figure in the reinvigoration and renationalization of Scottish cultural life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As well as editions of the poems of Allan Ramsay, James Thomson, Burns, Scott, and Thomas Campbell, he published a selection from the work of the great fifteenth-century Scots poet William Dunbar... Through his regular contributions to The Scotsman and to other periodicals Logie Robertson worked tirelessly to promote interest in Scottish literature and culture" (ibid.). Octavo (185 x 120 mm). Contemporary red morocco by Zaehnsdorf, spine with gilt dotted raised bands, compartments framed and lettered in gilt, covers and board edges ruled in gilt, elaborate foliate roll to turn-ins, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Spine slightly faded with a couple of trivial scuffs, a little foxing to endpapers, contents clean. A very good copy indeed, presenting attractively in the binding.
