Cyrano De Bergerac

By Rostand, Edmond

The legendary romance about a quick-witted swashbuckler whose nose is as big as his heart

Set during the reign of Louis XIII, Cyrano de Bergerac is a play about one of the most estimable characters in literature. Desperately in love with the beautiful Roxane but convinced she will never look past his titanic proboscis, Cyrano helps the tongue-tied Christian pen exquisite verse with which to woo her. Presented in an elegant new translation, this comic adventure continues to be popular for its dramatic power and, above all, its magnetic hero.

CYRANO DE BERGERAC

ROSTAND, EDMOND

Paris: Eugène Fasquelle, 1898. FIRST EDITION, First Printing. This is a remarkable unopened copy of Rostand's influential and enduringly popular verse play in five acts. A theatrical triumph from its opening night, "Cyrano" was quickly translated into multiple languages, and brought to English the untranslatable term, "panache." Rostand (1868-1918) wrote a number of successful plays, often, like "Cyrano," based on figures from French history. While copies appear on the market with some regularity, one is very unlikely to find one in closer to original condition than the present volume.. 200 x 140 mm. (7 3/4 x 5 1/2"). 6 p.l, [13]-225 pp., [1] leaf (first and last leaves blank). FIRST EDITION, First Printing. Publisher's original light green paper wrappers, ENTIRELY UNOPENED. With early glassine wrapper. In a later cloth clamshell box. Rear cover with a hint of smudging and rumpling, a touch of fraying to tail of spine, but AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY, never read and little changed since the day it left the press. Cyrano de Bergerac [Presentation Copy] ; Translated by Howard Thayer Kingsbury: Accepted and Played by Richard Mansfield

ROSTAND, Edmond (1868-1918)

Boston, New York, London: Lamson, Wolffe and Company, 1898. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine+. First English Edition, inscribed in an elegant hand by the translator on front fly leaf: "Compliments of / Howard Thayer Kingsbury / November, 1898." Small 8vo: 241,[1]pp. Publisher's original red cloth lettered and decorated in silver to spine and upper board, with frontispiece portrait (tissue guard still present) of the actor Richard Mansfield in costume. A Near Fine or better, spine slightly faded (though silver remains bright) and darkened page edges. Very scarce, particularly in this condition. Cyrano de Bergerac was first published in France by Charpentier et Fasquelle in 1898 (following its stage production at the Porte Saint-Martin Theater in Paris on December 28, 1897), and first translated into English by Kingsbury for Lamson, Wolffe the same year. Mansfield was the first actor to play Cyrano in the United States in an English translation. The play is based loosely on the life of Savien de Cyrano de Bergerac (1619-1655), Rostand's favorite writer. "Yet the character as portrayed by Rostand - with his excessively-enlarged nose, his almost super-human duelling skills and his ability to improvise eloquent poetic speeches - is far from an exact portrait of the real-life Cyrano of the seventeenth century. . . . Possessed of a keen intellect with an insatiable appetite for reading and for learning, he constantly experiments with, when he is not challenging outright, the established social, scientific, political and religious ideas of his day. This questioning, satirising and ridiculing of contemporary authorities, along with an open-mindedness to new concepts that remains strikingly modern, has earned Cyrano a firm place amongst the libertin writers of seventeenth-century France." (Literary Encyclopedia) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

CYRANO DE BERGERAC

Rostand, Edmond

New York: William R. Jenkins, 1898. 1st Edition. Hardcover. New York: William R. Jenkins, 1898. 1st Edition. Hardcover. The True First American Edition. A near fine example of this rare [French Language] American publication bound in decorated green cloth over boards. 8vo. [1-6], 7-239 pages preceding the Doubleday English edition. With author & title credits in highly decorative gold lettering on the upper cover above an illustrated black stamped image of Cyrano gazing upward: author, title and publisher credit across the backstrip, teg. fore-edge uncut. With 9 black & white plates. In a sound binding, with extremities only very lightly rubbed. A very nice copy. Rare. Cyrano was first published [1898] by Librairie Charpentier et Fasquelle in Paris. In the United States it was published first in French in the same year by the William R. Jenkins Company & then in a much more broadly distributed English version by the firm of Doubleday, McClure which is most often called erroneously the first US edition. In the same year, Heinemann published the 1st UK edition. Both English language editions are preceded by the sparse Jenkins French printing; the French [American] copies being very far outnumbered by the later English language ones. This is the true First American Printing of Cyrano, in the very nice decorated original binding. Rostand's highlight & basis for two screen efforts; The Jose Ferrer 1950's original & the 1990 remake starring Gerard Depardieu. Ferrer won Best Actor Academy award for his portrayal of Cyrano. The 1990 film was up for five awards, including Oscar nominations for Depardieu & for the Best Foreign Film.

ROSTAND, Edmond (1868-1918)

New York: William R. Jenkins, 1898. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine+. First American Edition (in French), preceding both British and American English-language editions. Tall 8vo: [6],7-239,[1]pp, with nine black and white plates, the first, of Rostand, with protective tissue. Publisher's vertically ribbed green cloth lettered in gilt and decorated in gilt and black, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. A better than Near Fine copy, binding sound, pages fresh and bright, plates clean and free of foxing. Cyrano de Bergerac was first published in France by Charpentier et Fasquelle in 1898 (following its stage production at the Porte Saint-Martin Theater in Paris on December 28, 1897), and then, in this edition, in New York. The play is based loosely on the life of Savien de Cyrano de Bergerac (1619-1655), known for his swashbuckling adventures and large nose, and was meticulously researched, down to the names of the members of the Académie française and the dames précieuses glimpsed before the performance in the first scene. Written in verse, in rhyming couplets of 12 syllables per line, very close to the Alexandrine format. Cyrano introduced the word "panache" into the English language.
