Fort Sill, Oklahoma, 1952. [Women][WAC] All items measuring between 9 1/8" x 6¾" and 4¼" x 3 1/8". Six black and white photos, three of which are professional portraits and several items of ephemera more particularly described below. Very good: light dust soiling on Station Hospital rosters, with oxidation at staples; ephemera in very fine shape. A small collection of memorabilia from a young woman's assignment as a WAC stationed in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Sergeant Gladys K. Crawford hailed from Massachusetts and enlisted in 1942, in the midst of World War II. An Ancestry.com search lists her as an Aviation Cadet, but we find no references or photos in relation to airplanes. Among her saved possessions is a certificate from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Treasury Department recognizing her service to the United States during World War II. Also included are an invitation to Tea and Open House from the USO Women's Unit, two Station Hospital rosters from 1944 and 1945, and a typed letter showing her name included among those who were promoted in her unit. Photos show Gladys in uniform, and with other WACs, along with three professional portraits. One of the portraits is signed Anita, which may be the same Anita who sent her a letter included in this collection, telling Gladys that she contemplated enlisting again if she could move to a hot, dry climate. Unfortunately, her only option was, "the swamp lands of Ft. Dix, N. J. " A pleasing collection of mementos once belonging to a young WAC.
