New York: Adolph Wittemann, 1885. Hardcover. Wide 64mo. Red cloth, heavily embossed in black. (12pp, rectos only), accordion style. Full-page illustrations. Very good. First edition of this foldout booklet of superb sepia-tone artist's renderings of twelve different scenes from Grant's life, likely published shortly after his death to capitalize on the sentimental surge which followed that July 23rd event. The images are titled "Ulysses S. Grant" (suit and tie head-and-shoulders portrait set within oval), "Grant's Birthplace at Point Pleasant," "Bombarding the Outworks of the City of Mexico from a Belfry, in 1847," "Battle of Shiloh," "Marching Into Vicksburg," "Surrender of General Lee," "Inauguration as President of the United States," "Presentation to the Emperor of Japan, Tour of the World," "A Reminiscence of Long Branch," "Genl. Grant Leaving His N.Y. House for the First Time After His Illness in April 1885," "Genl. Grant at the Drexel Cottage, Mt McGregor" and "General Grant's Funeral Procession Passing Up Fifth Avenue." This complete set, including the decorative front and rear booklet cover, has been separated at each accordion fold, archivally free- floated and artfully arranged symmetrically and asymmetrically against a backdrop of glazed red and gold 19th century marbled paper and framed in a modern 3/4" wood and gilt frame with total dimensions of 16" X 20". This set is nigh impossible to find in choice collector's condition. Given its delicate nature, it's invariably found in seriously damaged and/or partial condition, with plates missing -- making this complete, clean and remarkably handsome full set quite exceptional. The unusual and tasteful presentation, with these marvelous images seeming to hover above the marbled paper backdrop, allows one to view the complete collection as it's never been seen before.

In the "Just Plain Weird" category, consider the man who from about 1925 on baffled the medical and scientific community with his ability to GROW. That's right, this famed sideshow performer appeared to grow inches taller on stage -- hence his nickname, "The Man Who Grows Before Your Eyes." Through the 1950s, Willard continued to amaze and confound, appearing on shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Show" (6 April 1958). Description:
Redlands, California: Pure Gold, [1955]. Stapled wraps. Very good. [12p.] Small chips to wrap edges. The Mutual Orange Distributors (MOD) was founded in Redlands, California, in 1906 as a cooperative marketing association representing citrus growers in California. Within a few years, the coop included citrus growers in western Arizona. In 1955, MOD changed its name to Pure Gold, originally the brand name for fruit grown by the approximately 2,500 MOD growers. Sunkist took over the Pure Gold trademark when the co-op closed in 1987 due to housing developments replacing the citrus fields and the shrinking number of packing plants. This booklet explains the history of the citrus-growing culture in California and Arizona and provides information on the variety of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit grown and their cultivation and packaging. A map on the back shows the regions represented by the Pure Gold cooperative. Scarce, none located in OCLC. B&w illustrations and halftone photographs. (11"x8-1/2")

He graduated from Amherst College in 1872. In 1873 Adams traveled to Europe to study and write. In 1874 he then moved to Heidelberg, Germany to pursue the Ph.D. degree. There he was influenced by Johann Gustav Droysen and Johann Kaspar Bluntschli, the latter also becoming his mentor. Heidelberg did not then require a thesis from its doctoral candidates, instead it required an oral examination, for which he chose political science for his major field (Hauptfach), with two minors… Read More
