Thomson's (1856-1940) paper describing the physics of droplet formation published three years before Charles Thomson Rees Wilson (1869-1959) published this first paper on the cloud chamber which he is credited with inventing and resulted in his 1927 Nobel Prize in Physics. Thomson's work on the conductivity of electricity through gases led to his winning of the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physics. Thomson also served as Wilson's academic advisor at Cambridge. vii, [1], 556 pp. 8vo. 9 plates, all folding. Original three quarter leather binding with gold lines and titling to spine, call number at base of spine in white ink indicates ex-library. Considerable wear and scuffing to the covers, losses at head and foot of spine and corners of boards, spine leather has separated from front board at hinge, cover still tight to text block.
