Doctor Zhivago

By Pasternak, Boris

Doctor Zhivago is a 20th century novel by Boris Pasternak, first published in 1957. The novel is named after its protagonist, Yuri Zhivago, a medical doctor and poet. It tells the story of a man torn between two women, set primarily against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the subsequent Russian Civil War of 1918–1920. More deeply, the novel discusses the plight of a man as the life that he has always known is dramatically torn apart by forces beyond his control.

France: Societe d'Edition et d'Impression Mondiale, 1959. Presumed first edition/first printing thus. Wraps. Good. No dust jacket. Cover has some wear and soiling. Some edge soiling.. 634, [6] p. Two volumes in one. Book is in Russian. As the United States government was adamant that US involvement in the distribution of the novel not be seen, the CIA turned to an unlikely partner to help distribute the books in Brussels: the Vatican. This hardback had blue linen covers. The CIA, recognized when it had a hit on its hands. Following the successful distribution of the first thousand Russian-language copies of Doctor Zhivago, the agency decided to fund a second print run, including 7, 000 copies for individuals who would take them into the Soviet Union and leave them for others to discover, and 2, 000 copies that would be distributed at the Vienna Youth Festival later that year. The CIA funded the publication of a miniature, lightweight paperback edition of Doctor Zhivago that could be easily mailed or concealed. Distribution of the miniature version began in April 1959. The Agency stamped each of these copies as coming from the Societe d'Edition et d Impression Mondiale, a nonexistent French publisher.

London; Collins Harvill. 1958. First edition. 8vo. Near fine in publisher's red cloth, in a near fine priceclipped dustjacket. Internally clean, offsetting to flyleaf. A superior copy. This copy accompanied by an envelope containing the original Mondrian inspired dustwrapper artwork, the collection consists of two cut and paste painted and printed mock ups of the original design, annotated by the artist/designer showing the original layout crediting Stephen Spender with translation of the poetry, inverting the Collins Harvill imprint on the spine and a couple of variations of the Nobel Prize mention on the spine. Also present are blocking transparencies, tracing paper layouts of fonts for the titles and a black and white layout mockup of the text with design notes detailing typefaces and positioning. A fascinating insight into the publishing and design process for this milestone work. Listed in The Times' NovelList Top 60 Poll [2013].

PASTERNAK, Boris.

Milan: Feltrinelli,, [1959]. Octavo. Original pale green boards, titles to spine and front board in black. With the dust jacket designed by Ampelio Tettamanti. Foot of spine slightly worn, small crack to head of spine, board edges slightly faded, contents lightly foxed; an excellent copy in the bright jacket, with short closed tear to head of spine, a few nicks and shallow chips to extremities, and tape repairs to verso. First Feltrinelli edition in Russian (the third overall), issued in the very attractive and distinctive dust jacket designed by Ampelio Tettamanti (1914–1961), matching that of the first edition, published in Italian by Feltrinelli in 1957. Doctor Zhivago was deemed unfit for publication within the Soviet Union due to certain passages that were perceived as anti-Soviet. It was therefore first published in Italian by Feltrinelli in 1957 after Pasternak signed a contract with him on 30 June 1956, granting the Italian publisher the copyright for translation. This edition was published in late April or early May 1959, and is preceded by the almost unobtainable, CIA-sponsored edition (September 1958) and the US edition, published in Michigan in plain cloth without a dust jacket (January 1959). The history of the book's publication in Russian is somewhat tangled: the first edition in Russian was printed by the Dutch publisher Mouton under Feltrinelli's imprint but without Feltrinelli's permission, as part of a covert CIA publishing and propaganda program, and the US edition was likewise intended to be published without acknowledgement of Feltrinelli's copyright. However, after the legal furore surrounding the publication of the Dutch edition, that decision was reversed, and the US edition in Russian was subsequently published with Feltrinelli's full consent and collaboration. Feltrinelli intended to publish this edition concurrently with the US publication, but due to printing delays his book was not published in Italy until four months after it appeared in the US.

Pasternak, Boris

Milan: Feltrinelli, 1958. Scarce first authorized trade edition in Russian, published in Milan, Italy. Octavo, original pale green paper-covered boards. In very good condition, lacking the rare dust jacket. Giangiacomo Feltrinelli of Milan published the true first edition, an Italian translation, in 1957. He then obtained a court order to prevent the publication of the work in Russian by Mouton. "It was well known that Pasternak was under serious consideration for a Nobel Prize in Literature and because of complications involving whether or not the novel itself would be considered part of his Nobel achievement and candidature, publication in the Russian langauge had to be no later than August 1958. Since Mouton was ahead of him in preparedness for the press, Feltrinelli allowed Mouton to go to press, but over his imprint. This edition of a few hundred copies was published on August 24. Some copies of this printing were pirated without the Feltrinelli imprint title page and were available at the Vatican Pavilion of the Brussels World Fair until October, some say with the connivance of the CIA and perhaps the British Secret Service, MI6. Within a few months of the Mouton edition over the Feltrinelli imprint, Feltrinelli issued his ‘real’ edition in Milan, but with a 1957 date and a slug line securing his copyright through the precedence of his Italian version. Thus, Feltrinelli secured his position as publisher of the Nobel candidate" (Biondi). In 1965, the novel was adapted into a film starring Omar Sharif in the title role as Yuri Zhivago and Julie Christie as his married love interest Lara Antipova. The film won five Oscars at the 38th Academy Awards in addition to five awards at the 23rd Golden Globe Awards. As of 2017, it is the eighth highest-grossing film of all time in the United States and Canada.

Pasternak, Boris.

New York:: Pantheon Books. (2010).. A new translation of Pasternak's masterpiece, first edition thus. This translation by Richard Pevear & Larissa Volokhonsky, the award-winning translators of WAR AND PEACE and ANNA KARENINA, was issued to mark the 50th anniversary of Pasternak's death. Reception of the translation has been mixed, with Pasternak's niece in particular leveling criticism at the pair, "It is quickly apparent that [they] follow the Russian very closely, without attempting to reconfigure its syntax or vocabulary into a more English form. This misguided literalism is disastrous in dialogue." Others have called the new translation more faithful to the original and even niece Ann Pasternak Slater allows that ommisions from the hastily produced 1958 translation(s) have been restored. Fine in slightly rumpled, near fine dust jacket. Unaccountably scarce. .
