Part of a series of books by George Wharton (1859-1950), an American illustrator, painter, and author, who became a prominent illustrator for magazines and newspapers, including Harper's Weekly, The Century Magazine, and Scribner's Magazine. § The Forest of Arden, also known as Arden or Ardennes, is a historic wooded region located in the county of Warwickshire, England. It was once a vast, dense forest that covered a significant portion of the county, stretching from the River Avon to the River Tame. The area has a rich history, dating back to the time of the ancient Britons and the Roman occupation of Britain. During the Middle Ages, the Forest of Arden was known for its woodlands and abundant wildlife, and it was a popular hunting ground for the English nobility. The forest also played a role in the folklore and legends of the region, such as the stories of Robin Hood and his band of outlaws, although the more famous Sherwood Forest is in Nottinghamshire. Today, much of the original forest has been cleared for agriculture and urban development, but there are still areas that have been preserved or have regrown, offering glimpses of the region's historic landscape. / Travel & History, Myths & Legends of England ; Decorative bindings.
