About This Item

The U.S. Army's youngest major general when he attained that rank in 1925, this controversial officer was named Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army in 1930; during World War Two he became commander of the U.S. Army Forces in the Far East and then Supreme Commander of the Southwest Pacific Area; he officially accepted Japan's surrender on September 2, 1945 aboard the U.S.S. Missouri; during the Korean War President Truman removed him from the United Nations Command in 1951. TNS, 1p, 8" X 10", New York, NY, 1953 February 6. Addressed to Joseph C. Chase. Very good. Faintly age toned, with two faint original folds. On plain stationery with his typed 90 Church Street address, the general sends this cordial note of thanks to an admirer for birthday wishes. Bold full signature in black ink at the close. Accompanied by a fine glossy 6¼" X 7 3/4" black and white news agency photograph (International News Photos), a candid closeup of MacArthur in civilian garb -- overcoat, silk scarf, hat. Caption at bottom dates it 25 January 1955 and describes the scene as "A striking closeup of General Douglas MacArthur just before he flew from New York today to celebrate his 75th birthday in Los Angeles tomorrow. California dignitaries and a million plain citizens are expected to greet the famous soldier, who is making his first visit to the city in 18 years. Part of the birthday celebration will be the unveiling of a monument in the general's honor at MacArthur Park in downtown Los Angeles." A nice letter with appropriate image.
