About This Item
Harlan Stone's successor as chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1946-53) was known as a strong liberal and a civil rights champion; previously, he served as a Kentucky representative and as treasury secretary under Truman. TNS, 1p, 8" X 10½", Washington, DC, 1924 February 18. Addressed to A.N. Marquis & Co. Very good. On Congressional letterhead, Vinson transmits "the personal sketch properly corrected as directed... of the 1924-25 Who's Who in America...." Boldly signed. Accompanied by the aforementioned sketch, a partly printed unsigned TD, 1p, 8½" X 11", n.p., 1924 February 19. Typed draft of Vinson's brief "Who's Who" entry, bearing one hand-printed correction, quite likely (but not conclusively) in Vinson's hand. Comes with a fine 8½" X 6½" glossy news agency photograph (International News Photo) of 1947 showing Vinson as chief justice administering the oath of office to the new U.S. Solicitor General while Attorney General Tom Clark observes. A choice and scarce image, with the original mimeographed caption sheet still present. A fascinating assemblage.
