Khrushchev, whose voice once commanded the councils of peace and war, marks his 75th birthday Thursday [2 days away] in oblivion and silence…No public mention of his birthday is expected…His volumes of speeches…has been removed from the libraries…Publicly Khrushchev is ignored as if he never existed…No Westerners are authorized [to visit him]…details of his lonely life are skimpy…apparently has taken up photography…During his years in power…"; NOTES: JOHN BAUSMAN, 1923-2016, worked for the Associated Press beginning in 1950 and covered such diverse posts as Newark and Atlantic City, New Jersey; Warsaw, Poland; Budapest, Hungary and Frankfurt, Germany…ended his foreign assignments as Chief of Bureau in Moscow during the Soviet era from 1968-1972…in 1970 was named by Isvestia as one of five Western correspondents promoting the cause of Zionism in his reporting…curiously his son Charles Bausman was identified in photographs as one of the activists breaking into the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and he fled to Russian before being apprehended for questioning (Southern Poverty Law Center, Far-Right Propagandist Turns up in Moscow After Jan. 6, Sept. 1, 2021); PROVENANCE: acquired at a Greenwich, CT, estate sale of John Bausman possessions including some career memorabilia /// CONDITION: well preserved, entirely legible, horizontal folds as kept by previous owner.
