N.p.: N.p., 1970. Archive of 298 vernacular snapshots of the 1966-1971 soap opera television series, taken from a television screen, carefully housed in a 29-page photograph album, circa 1970. A peculiar and substantial archive, anonymously shot and compiled, circa 1969-1970, of the televised broadcast.
A remarkable document of the obsessive fandom that accompanied the strange and long-running soap, the likes of which were never repeated before or since.
The beloved cult classic television series, "Dark Shadows," aired on weekdays, and maintained a curious hybrid of gothic horror, science fiction, and the paranormal. It aired on ABC from June 27, 1966 to April 2, 1971, for a staggering total of 1225 episodes.
The original series spawned an ongoing franchise, which included the 1970 film "House of Dark Shadows," directed by its creator Dan Curtis, and again starring Jonathan Frid and Grayson Hall, the 1971 film "Night of Dark Shadows," also directed by Curtis, and starring David Selby and Hall.
1991 saw a television series remake starring Ben Cross and Lysette Anthony. In 2012 "Dark Shadows" was reimagined as a comedy horror film, directed by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer.
Dimensions of the snapshots in the archive are as follows: 2 x 2 inch (24 snapshots), undated, 3.5 x 3.5 inch (165 snapshots), and 5 x 3.5 inch (109 snapshots). All but 77 of the photographs have a manuscript notation at the margin of the year they were developed, all years noted being 1969 or 1970.
15.25 x 11 inch photo album with string binding, Near Fine. Snapshots affixed with corner mounts, with a few corner mounts missing, but all of the snapshots present, none loose, generally about Near Fine.
