London: William Cloves, 1865. These are the administrative papers of the Royal Geographical Society of London which contain letters and dissertations as well as lectures made by explorers. They were published annually as the 'Proceedings' and were separately published from the Society's Journal. Presented here is a double volume No. 8 and No. 9 from 1863 - 1865 which contains a number of polar articles such as the one by Osborn (30 pages). Also present are Petermann (North Polar Exploration), Hickson (Climate and Exploration of North Pole), Markham (Best route for North Polar Exploration), Murchison (Speech on North Polar Exploration), Lady Franklin (Letter on North Poklar Expedition), Linnean Society (Minute on North Polar Expedition), Jansen (Early Dutch Navigators in Arctic Regions and Notes on the Ice between Greenland and Nova Zembla), Hayes (Scientific Results of American Arctic Expedition). Accompanied by a highly detailed Table of Voyages Towards the North Pole, detailing the captain and ship, the latitude and the nature of observation as well as some crucial remarks. These papers clearly summarize the current knowledge of Arctic waters after the Inglefield and McClintock expeditions which brought proof of Franklin's demise. They also clearly demonstrate the effort put forth by the Royal Geographical and Linnean Society to lobby the government to mount another expedition so as not not lose the Arctic advantage to other nations. Accompanying the volume is an ALS by Sherard Osborn advising his correspondent that his election for Fellow of the RGS is not up until the next meeting.. Manuscript.

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.

Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt sailing ship to front cover. Translated by Anthony Mango. Second Series, volumes 138 and 139. First edition.By the early sixteenth century the loosely knit kingdom of Georgia had disintegrated from the strong monarch of the middle ages to a number of small states and principalities. This internal disunity made the Georgians easy victims of the power politics of the neighboring Ottoman and Safavid empires, and by the end of the century the southward drive of the Russians intensified the struggle for military and diplomatic control over the whole of the Caucasian isthmus. As a result of this struggle seventeen embassies were exchanged between the Russian tsars and the Georgian kins ruling in Kakheti during the years 1564-1605. W E D Allen and Anthony…
