Carnegie Hall Program, Season 1943-1944, Tuesday Evening, November 30, [1943] at 8:30 o'clock, Max Reinhardt Memorial Committee. In Memoriam Max Reinhardt. New York: Alfred Scott, publisher: November 1943. 80 Members of the New York Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra Bruno Walter, Conductor, Kerstin Thorborg, Contralto. Address by Ernst Lothar. 16 pages. Sold with a handbill, "In Memoriam Max Reinhardt at Carnegie Hall Tuesday, November 30, at 8:30."

Having collaborated with Max Reinhardt in Europe as early as 1910, Bruno Walter found Reinhardt's treatment of background music "not very appealing," and this use of background music as only background music was a source of friction between them. Reinhardt's son said of Walter's participation in this 1943 event that the family would have preferred Toscanini to Walter, "with whom [Reinhardt] had been at odds more than once." See: Gottfried Reinhardt, The Genius: A Memoir of Max Reinhardt. New York: Knopf, 1979, p. 392.
