Intriguing printed "(U)nion Presidential Ticket / Election Nov. 8, 1864," imprinted Logan County, Ohio, crossed out in pencil, "Seneca County" written above. "For Pres., (A)braham Lincoln, of Ill. For Vice Pres., (A)ndrew Johnson, of Tenn.," the left margin a printer's error, cut closely, removing first letter of "Union," "Abraham," and "Andrew" – in addition to printing the wrong county. Large woodcut of a Rubenesque Miss Columbia, wearing Centurion helmet lettered "Liberty," brandishing "Union" sword, stars on sunrays behind, the woodcut possibly drawn locally by an aspiring artist. 2 1/2 x 7. Also listing 21 Ohio Electors. Light folds, one pinhole at center, lacking blank upper right corner, some dust toning, else about very good, and an interesting conversation piece. Likely a printer's proof, hastily cut from a larger press sheet, for the Board of Elections to proofread before running the job; indeed, research shows that one of the electors, Jacob Scroggs, was from Tiffin, in Seneca County, not Logan County (he was also a delegate to the Republican National Convention).

Announcement of the order by President Johnson to end the naval blockade against foreign commerce, except in the ports of Galveston, Lasalle, Brazos de Santiago (Port Isabel) and Brownsville, Texas. "All such offenders will be held and dealt with as pirates." Although Lee had surrendered in April 1865, the Confederate armies in Texas had not surrendered, hence the U. S. naval blockade on Texas ports needed to be maintained.

Mr. Taylor writes to a friend passing on word that "Mr. Shropshire requested me to let you know that he wishes the negro hire settled." Says Mr. Shropshire will be here a few days and mentions he may be in Lagrange today. There is a town named La Grange in Texas and there was a prominent slave and plantation owner named Shropshire in nearby Columbus, Texas. John Samuel Shropshire moved to Texas in 1854 and settled in Columbus, Colorado County. In 1860 Shropshire owned sixty-one slaves and operated a 750-acre plantation. - Handbook of Texas. It was common for slavers to hire out the enslaved persons, as shown in this letter on the eve of the Civil War.
