Based on S. S. Van Dine's 1934 novel, featuring Van Dine's recurring character Philo Vance. A party guest at a wealthy Manhattan estate vanishes, presenting a new case for foppish bon vivant and New York detective Philo Vance. The only film adaptation of Van Dine's long-running series to feature actor Warren William as Vance.

Set in Manhattan.
