Fraudulent Christian faith healer Jonas Nightengale (Steve Martin) makes a living swindling people as his revival meetings with the help of his friend and manager Jane (Debra Winger). When their truck breaks down in Rustwater, a town desperate for rain to save their crops, Jonas decides to hold a revival, leaving it up to the town sheriff, Will Braverman (Liam Neeson), to keep his townspeople from being conned.

Stage magician and sleight of hand artist Ricky Jay was brought in as consultant for cons and fauds.
