About This Item

19 items of handwritten ephemera from John Hoffman Collamore (1816-1896), traveler and member of the Columbian Lodge, Boston, MA (Founded by Paul Revere) and Member of the Massachusetts Genealogical Society. All items from 1836 through 1860's when he resided in France and took part in the French Wars of the 1860's. Hand written receipts of purchased items and lodging expenses and a note in Collamore's hand about an itinerary of his travel in Europe. After extensive travel all over the US, Latin America and Europe, John Collamore returned to Boston and lived out the remainder of this life in Boston. John Hoffman Collamore was born in Boston, November 21, 1816. He was the son of Gilman and Maria Eliza (Hoffman) Collamore. The father was an importer and dealer in china and crockery ware. The son had his education in the old Salem Street Academy and in Chauncy Hall School. In his youth he was exceedingly ford of travel, and had a special love for the sea. He made one voyage as a common sailor. He crossed to Europe in the sloop-of-war "Jamestown" and remained there nearly twenty years, tramping over the continent and canoeing up from the great revers, such as the Seine and the Rhone. Having influence with the French government, he was permitted to accompany its army during the Franco-Austro-Italian war, and was an eye-witness of the battles of Solferino and Magenta. Re-crossing the ocean, he traveled through the United States, Mexico, the West Indies, South America and the Hawaiian Islands, always walking when it was possible to do so. At length, feeling the approach of age, he returned to Boston, made himself a home on Columbus Avenue, and settled down amid books and works of art. He was one of the trustees of Mt. Hope Cemetery. He was a well-known member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company. In 1890 he joined the Masonic Fraternity and passed rapidly through all its grades, to the highest. He was very generous in his relations to the order. There is hardly a Masonic organization in Boston or its immediate vicinity that has not received substantial tokens of his regard. In his will he bequeathed sums amounting to $64,000 to the charity funds of various Masonic bodies. Mr. Collamore became a member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society in 1894. He was never married, but left three adopted children. He died in Boston, November 3, 1896. "memorial biographies of the New England historic genealogical society, Towne Memorial fund Volume IX 1890-1897. Boston: Published by the Society 18 Somerset St. 1908"

"Brother John Hoffman Collamore (November 21, 1816 – November 3, 1896) - was a traveler and philanthropist. Born in the city of Boston, Mass., November 21, 1816. He received his education first at the Old Salem Street Academy, then entered the Chauncey Hall School. He worked in a Boston counting house for several years, but the urge to travel proved too strong, and he went to sea, being one among the first to volunteer to travel to Ireland to provide relief to those suffering from terrible famine. Brother Collamore became from this time forward a great traveler, and for many years devoted his travels over a great part of Europe on foot. At one time he was absent from the United States for eighteen years. After his return from Europe, he next went to South America, and visited many parts of that then little known continent; also visiting the Sandwich Islands, Mexico and the West Indies. Returning to the United States, he next began a series of tours, during which he visited nearly every state and territory in the Union, including Alaska. At the close of these tours he settled in Boston, and devoted himself to the care and management of his extensive financial interests. He was made a Master Mason in Columbian Lodge, Boston, on January 2nd, 1890, and very quickly became active in Many Masonic organizations, including:; St. Andrew's Royal Arch Chapter, Boston Commandery, Knights Templar, Boston Council, Lafayette Lodge of Perfection, Giles F. Yates Council, Princes of Jerusalem, Mount Olivet Chapter, Rose-Croix, and Massachusetts Consistory. At the Session of the Supreme Council of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the United States, held at Providence, R. I., in September 1892, Brother Collamore was elected to the Honorary Grade of Sovereign Grand Inspector-General (33°). Brother Collamore was widely esteemed for his great love for and interest in the welfare of the Fraternity; shown by him not only through his personal activity and zeal in the work, but through the many substantial gifts he has made to the several branches of the Order with which he is identified. Among these, worthy of special mention, is the Columbian Lodge burial plot at the Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA." courtesy of Columbian Lodge A.F. & A.M.
