About This Item

JIMMY KELLY'S. THE MONTMARTRE OF NEW YORK. New York: Jimmy Kelly, 1940. A souvenir program (11 7/8 in x 9 in) for Jimmy Kelly's infamous nightclub in New York City, at 181 Sullivan Street, Greenwich Village. Colored stiff paper covers and 16 pages of illustrations and text, featuring sports and show business celebrities like Joe DiMaggio, Jimmy Durante, Franchot Tone, ex-mayor Jimmy Walker, Al Jolson, Jack Dempsey, Sophie Tucker and Ethel Merman to name but some of the personalities featured in reproduced photographs with Jimmy Kelly. Also reproduced are newspaper articles extolling the entertainment and food at Jimmy Kelly's nightclub. Partial nudity and suggestive choreography in the floor shows were features which inspired comparisons to the Folies Bergère in Paris. Jimmy Kelly's real name was Giovanni de Silvo, known for his ties to the political machinery of Tammany Hall in New York and his ties to the network of shadowy businesses providing adult entertainment as well as deliveries of beverages to his various establishments in lower Manhattan. Condition fine.
