About This Item

[Harriet Beecher Stowe] Mammoth Uncle Tom's Cabin. Erie Litho. & Printing Co., Erie, PA. 1916. Two-sided lithographed illustrated theatrical broadside, 27 ¾ in x 10 ¼ in, verso reads, "Grand 1916 Triumphal Tour. New Uncle Tom's Cabin Company." The front has three 6 in x 9 in lithographs by the Erie Lithography and Publishing Company, made famous by Cole & Harris in the 1890s, with Uncle Tom above portraits of Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Billed as a live theatrical event not a "moving picture show," this copy was never actually used to advertise an event, as the space at the bottom below "Will Exhibit At" is blank. The verso advertises this production as the Grand 1916 Triumphal Tour by theNew Uncle Tom's Cabin Company, then in its tenth year. This rare surviving broadside has been washed to reduce the acidity of the paper and discoloration. The paper has been buffered, resized and weak areas have been reinforced with mulberry paper and wheat paste. The condition is now very good, conservation noted.
