Illustrated throughout with black and white images and maps.
"The salt flats have many interesting properties. they are so flat or level that the actual curvature of the earth can be observed! Watch the telegraph poles march out of sight across the horizon as you drive east from Wendover. The white surface is always cool and mirages shimmer all year around because the blinding white surface reflects all the sun's light and heat, and several of the islands seem to float on a seat of heat waves." - p.4.
