Finnegans Wake

By Joyce, James

Finnegans Wake is a work of comic fiction by Irish author James Joyce, significant for an experimental style and its resulting reputation as one of the most difficult works of fiction in the English language. Written in Paris over a period of 17 years, and published in 1939, two years before the author's death, Finnegans Wake was Joyce's final work. -

First edition identification and notes

Faber and Faber in London and Viking Press in New York simultaneously published Finnegans Wake in May 1939. True first editions are bound in yellow cloth with a red spine. The novel was published with a limited print run of just 500 numbered copies signed by Joyce. First editions have sold for upwards of $20,000.

Other collectible or notable editions

In 2014, Folio Society published a new illustrated edition of Finnegans Wake with twelve collages and an insightful introduction by artist John Vernon Lord.

FINNEGANS WAKE

Joyce James

London: Faber and Faber, 1939. First Edition, First Issue, Signed by James Joyce and limited to 425 copies only, of which this is number 341. 8vo, publisher’s original red buckram lettered in gilt on spine, t.e.g., other edges untrimmed. Yellow cloth slipcase expertly re-created as the original. 628. A fine copy, very handsome, bright and clean, very well preserved and without wear. The slipcase in beautiful condition. IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION SIGNED BY JAMES JOYCE. A very desirable copy of this, the best and scarcest issue of the first editions. No book has ever been more ambitiously conceived than Joyce’s FINNEGANS WAKE. If ULYSSES represents the pinnacle of the Modernist movement, FINNEGANS WAKE is a step beyond; it stands in the same relation to ULYSSES as ULYSSES does to A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST....—an extension which is also a completely new conception. Joyce envisioned the book as nothing less than a "history of the world." Seventeen years in the writing, and composed in a sort of meta-language--"an Esperanto for the art of fiction"--it stands as a unique monument to language and literature and the modern age.

Finnegans Wake

JOYCE, JAMES

FIRST EDITION, the deluxe issue, one of only 425 numbered copies signed by James Joyce. The notoriously difficult Finnegans Wake is probably the most ambitious work of literature of the twentieth century. The writing of Finnegans Wake occupied Joyce's life from 1922, the year of the publication of Ulysses, until 1939, two years before the author's death. Some critics consider Finnegans Wake to be "Joyce's masterpiece . . . If aesthetic merit were ever again to center the canon, Finnegans Wake would be as close as our chaos could come to the heights of Shakespeare or Dante" (Harold Bloom, The Western Canon). Anthony Burgess called Finnegans Wake "a great comic vision, one of the few books of the world that can make us laugh aloud on nearly every page." "Joyce insisted that each word, each sentence had several meanings and that the 'ideal lecteur' should devote his lifetime to it, like the Koran" (Connolly). "Purely in terms of literary technique, Finnegans Wake is probably the most astonishing – and controversial – book ever written. Completed in 1939 after seventeen years of labor, it was received with a mix of reactions ranging from bafflement to delight to open hostility. … And yet today, whole careers have been devoted to studying Finnegans Wake, and its many adherents past and present approach it with something close to awe" (Joseph Campbell). Connolly, The Modern Movement 81. Burgess, Best Novels in English Since 1939 25.Original buckram, yellow cloth slipcase. Light wear and soiling to case. A fine copy.

JOYCE, JAMES. - [MAIN WORK OF 20TH CENTURY LITERATURE]

London, Faber and Faber Limited, (1939). Orig. red cloth in very fine condition. Orig. red and yellow dust-jacket with a few tears to extremities. Small piece (ab. 1 cm) lacking at top of front wrapper and about the same at top of back wrapper. Minor loss of paper to top capital, far from affecting lettering. A nice, not price-clipped copy. First (blank) leaf and last two leaves browned (due to a loosely laid in leaf of a newspaper), otherwise internally near mint. Uncut. ¶ First edition. This masterpiece by one of the greatest modern writers is probably the most celebrated as well as least read of Joyce's works. He spent 16 years writing it, and rarely, if not never, has a work of English literature been so debated and written about before its appearance as this one. "The book which would be the most important event of any season in which it appeared." (Front flap).

Finnegan's Wake

Joyce, James

Viking Press, NY, 1947. 1st edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Finnegan's Wake' was Joyce's last work and has received increased and growing accolades over the years. As comic prose, the structure is formed around convoluted, complex word puns with references to intellectual, scientific, and literary sources. Stream of consciousness, literary allusions, and free dream association develop an unique language. To further complicate the reading, the sentence fragment at the end of the book is the beginning of the sentence that begins the book as a fragment. Owner book plate. 1ST US EDITION, 5TH PRINTING.
