GONE WITH THE WIND

by Mitchell, Margaret

  • Used
  • Hardcover
New York: Macmillan, 1936. Thick octavo. Gray cloth, lettered in blue. Modest rubbing at corners, with a few small smudges to cloth, usual light tanning to endsheets, but a very good, tight copy in shelfworn dust jacket with a creased edge tear, two large chips to the spine panel, and a clean split part way up the lower joint. Half morocco folding slipcase. First edition, first printing. Signed by Mitchell on the front free endsheet. The dust jacket is price-clipped, but is in the preferred state, with the "Spring Novels" advert on the lower panel showing this work as the second title in the right hand column. "The book that lives on and on, decried by the devotees of higher criticism, scorned by the intellectuals, and loved by the public. It was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1937" - Harwell. WILLINGHAM & HARWELL 120. Harwell, IN TALL COTTON 125.

Description:
The first edition PAN X434 was published in the UK in 1965 with a cover by Raymond Hawkey and "Not for sale in the in the UK", 250,000 copies were printed in July 1965.
The second edition of PAN X434 were printed in 1966 and shipped with a movie tie-in cover replacing the Hawkey scorpion and pearl cover. PAN Books had remaining stock of the first printing of 1965 with the Hawkey cover and applied a wrap of the movie tie-in edition to the remaining 1965 copies.
There is no record as to how many of these variants were shipped by PAN, the majority of the authentic variants discovered over the years have been found in Australia.
This a good unread copy, has tanned pages and foxing. The foxing is on the inside of the cover and first page, first page has a vertical tanning section where the wrap faces, this tanning supports the authenticity of this being the actual book shipped with the wrapper and not swapped out for another copy, there is a remains clipping to the front cover. The back cover has foxing… Read More

A fine set of books in very good dustwrappers, designed by Michael Harvey with some toning to the spines and a small amount of rubbing to extremities. Some volumes have a neat previous owner name on the front free endpaper and four of the wrappers nave been neatly price-clipped. A very good set with the added bonus of Greene's signature and inscription in Brighton Rock.
