The Gremlins.

DAHL, Roald.

New York: Random House,, 1943. Quarto. Finely bound by The Chelsea Bindery in full red morocco, titles to spine gilt, single rule to boards gilt, block to front board gilt with multi-coloured morocco onlay of seven cavorting gremlins, twin rule to turn-ins, dark green endpapers, gilt edges. Illustrated throughout in colour and black and white. A fine copy. First Edition, First Printing. Roald Dahl's first book and his only collaboration with Walt Disney, The Gremlins was written as a promotional device for a feature-length Disney animation that was never produced, partly because the studio could not establish firm copyright in the "gremlin" characters (Dahl claimed to have invented them, though they had been common currency in the RAF and had appeared in print at least once before) and partly because the British Air Ministry wanted final approval of the script and production. It was eventually agreed that royalties would be split between the RAF Benevolent Fund and Dahl. The book is still described on the title and the front cover as being "From the Walt Disney Production", although the Disney studio had written to Dahl in August 1943 cancelling any further preproduction work.

"His wartime experiences led him to write The Gremlins, a fantasy about a race of tiny people who live in Air Force planes and cause all the technical troubles that pilots experience; the story was serialized in Cosmopolitan Magazine in 1942 and the film rights were bought by Disney, though filming never took place" (The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature). According to Penguin Press, the book "caught Eleanor Roosevelt's eye and Roald became a not infrequent guest at the White House and FDR's weekend retreat, Hyde Park.

THE GREMLINS

Dahl, Roald

Published by Collins, 1944. 1st edition.. Hardback. Good. Illustrated by Disney, Walt. Almost very good condition with no wrapper. Dahl's first book for children, inspired directly by his wartime experiences. The story of the mischievous 'little people' who tamper with the RAF's aeroplanes and cause all the breakdowns, faults and crashes that the enemy are usually blamed for. Disney studios provided the illustrations and began to make the film of the book but it was never finished. This is the UK edition published one year after the first US edition. Red pictorial front board, cloth spine. Yellow pictorial endpapers. Delightful richly coloured full-page illustrations plus b/w sketches. 11.25 x 8.75". Creasing to covers; especially bottom corner of front cover. Spine is unevenly faded with 2.5" split to side; some fraying to cloth. Uneven fading to cover edges. Foxing to endpapers, outer page edges and some page margins. A few other margin marks.

The Gremlins: A Royal Aitr Force Story (from The Walt Disney Production)

Roald Dahl

New York: Random House, 1943. Hardcover. Very Good. Oversized hardcover in color illustrated boards over red cloth spine strip. No statement of edition. Illustrated endpapers. Unpaginated (50 pp.) Illustrated with full page color drawings and additional black and white drawings in the text and in the margins. THE AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK--on the title page he is credited as "Flight Lieutenant Roald Dahl". About very good, some light dampstaining to the upper right corner of the front board and the lower left corner of the rear board, shallow wear along the bottom edge of the front board and the bottom edge of the rear board and tips, some recoloring foot of spine. Internally clean and bright. No jacket. The book was written as an advance promotional publication for a planned Disney full length animated film. The film, however, was never made. Disney animators had begun, with Dahl's assitance, to develop the charaters and their appearance (as evidenced by the book illustrations) but during pre-production, the project was abandoned due to complications over the rights to the movie, a dispute that involved the British Air Ministry and the fact bthat Dahl insisted on final approval of the script and the production (a condition that Walt Disney would never, for virtually any of his projects, ever approve).

The Gremlins: A Royal Air Force Story

Roald Dahl

First Edition; First Printing full number line Intro by Leonard Maltin Roald Dahl was a WWII pilot and this is "A Royal Air Force Story" by Flight Lieutenant Roald Dahl. "Published in 1943 and long unavailable, Dark Horse Books is proud to present this landmark book from the author of such beloved tales as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach and Matilda. Digitally restored, this remarkable presentation of Dahl's classic story, lavishly illustrated by the artists of the Walt Disney Studios, will delight readers of all ages! The Gremlins is the story of Gus, a British World War II fighter pilot, who during the Battle of Britain turned to look out on the wing of his plane only to see an amazing sight: a little man, no more than six inches tall with horns growing from his head, drilling a hole in the plane's wing. Gus was the first man to ever see a Gremlin, and what happened after that would change the war, and the world, forever. Bought by Walt Disney(the only collaboration between Dahl and Disney) to be produced as an animated motion picture (and considered to be the first story featuring the mythical airplane sabotaging creatures known as Gremlins), the project was ultimately shelved and is reprinted here for the first time in over 60 years." *The last image Disney and Dahl together was uploaded from the web- I just wanted to share it.
