Inscribed by the author: "for Dave my old friend with affection and very respectful Peter New York August 2, 1960." David McDowell began his career in publishing as a sales manager and publicity director at New Directions Publishing. Subsequently, he became an editor at Random House, and in 1957, he and Ivan Obolensky established McDowell, Obolensky, Inc. McDowell's full name appears in pencil on the endsheet.
