The modest costume illustrations of women's clothing styles date from the 1890's to 1900 while the book mysteriously dates , ca. 1881 .... Interestingly authored by aparently insecure author who referred to himself as the latest victiim - a.k.a. - " Smelllfungus " !!....One of the Ruby Books Series for Boys and girls, but a humorous book intended for adults , with the nice illustrations originally by Pauline Adams, in the original 1876 edition. Authored by John Habberton ( 1842 - 1921 ) for 20 years Literary and Dramitic for The New York Herald ; famous for his book : " Romantic California , Thrilling, Pathetic, And Humous ".... The book : " Helen's Babies " about the writer's visit to his sister's innocent crafty, angelic,pish, witching, and repulsive - resulting in the author convincing himself to get married. A major literary success in its time, highly estmated by Rufyard Kipling, written about by G.K. Chesterton and George Orwell. Two quizzicalpressioned young children one astruggling bonneted litttle girl driving a gost cart with a stubborn horned goat, the other, a knickers wearing boy struggling to pull on the goat's hons to make him move on the ftont color in colorhol illustration on cloth bool with red letteringwith red and black lettering on spine. Original red cloth binding with gilt lettering, and gilt vignette of two children to the front board, generally very good with minimal rubbing, a little spotting/fading to the fore-edge of the front board and the spine a little faded and dulled. Contents clean and tight, no inscriptions, no foxing, all the plates are in very good condition and all the captioned tissue guards are present, a couple with slight creases. A very good copy.. The box is perfectly solid with a dampstain at the bottom affecting all four sides. A common title in rare condition.
