Henry Brocken.

DE LA MARE, Walter.

London: John Murray,, 1904. Octavo in half-sheets. Original blue cloth, spine richly gilt with Art Nouveau floral design, top edge gilt. Spine toned with a few nicks at extremities, pale mottling towards bottom edge of boards, joints rubbed, corners bumped, free endpapers browned, contents slightly toned. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To Henry Newbolt, from W. J. de la Mare, thank you". An important association: after eighteen years working in the statistics department at Anglo-American Oil, de la Mare's verse finally secured the "eager championship" of Newbolt, who secured him a royal bounty grant of 200 which allowed him to leave his day-job and devote himself to writing full-time (ODNB). This copy in second state, with the bracket after "Ramal" on the title-page. With Henry Brocken de la Mare took his reader on an imaginary trip into the worlds of other literary greats such as Poe, Bronte, and Cervantes.

HENRY BROCKEN: HIS TRAVELS AND ADVENTURES IN THE RICH, STRANGE, SCARCE-IMAGINABLE REGIONS OF ROMANCE ..

De la Mare, Walter

London: John Murray, 1904.. Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v-x 1-202, original decorated blue cloth, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition, first issue with plain top edge and no final bracket after "Walter Ramal" on title page. The author's first work of fiction. This novel "hovers strangely between the abstract and the particular. Brocken sets out on an allegorical journey to various booklands, where he meets characters like Jane Eyre, Nick Bottom, Sleeping Beauty and Criseyde; but the mild educational benignity of the trip is destroyed, in the end, by Brocken's refusal of Criseyde's erotic needs, and he is cast back, defeated, into a dry mortality." - Clute and Grant, The Encyclopedia of Fantasy, p. 261. Bleiler, Supernatural Fiction Writers, pp. 499-500. Bleiler (1978), p. 59. Reginald 04029. Touch of rubbing to cloth at upper and lower extremities of spine panel and corner tips, a nearly fine copy. (#67240)
