About This Item

London: Thomas Nelson & Sons. Very Good+ with no dust jacket. 1958. Reprint. Hardcover. Missing DJ if issued. ; Blue rexine boards with gilt lettering to spine, top edge gilt. Nice tight copy, no names or marks inside. ; The Winchester Classics; 576 pages; Thackeray chose the reign of Queen Anne for the setting of The History of Henry Esmond. He constructed this book with great care, giving it a much more formal plot structure. The story, narrated by Esmond, begins when he is 12, in 1691, and ends in 1718. Beatrix and Esmond, the main characters, give its various incidents a unity. They stand out against a background of London society and the political life of the time. .
