Octavo, 138pp. Red cloth, title printed in black on spine, title on front cover with illustration. Top edge dyed red. Stated "first edition" on copyright page. In publisher's first state dust jacket, $2.00 on front flap, light chipping along edges, sunning to spine, otherwise bright. Includes a laid-in invitation to the Hotchkiss Dinner at the Yale Club, where Hersey was scheduled to speak. Into the Valley was John Hersey's second work, following Men on Bataan. His next book, A Bell for Adano, would earn him the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1945.
