Derleth, August

Sauk City, Wisconsin: M&M / Mycroft and Moran, 1945. First Edition, First Printing. Cloth. Fine/Fine. 12mo, (7 1/2" x 5 3/8"), black cloth with red lettering on spine, Foreword by Vincent Starrett, "A Word" from Dr. Lyndon Parker, Mylar-protected pictorial red-black dust jacket, depicting Sherlockian Solar Pons chasing a carriage, xv + 281 pages. SCARCE--especially in this Superior condition. One of 3,000 copies printed by The Collegiate Press, Menasha, Wisc. Handsome Bookplate depicting Jean d'Arc on free front endpaper. The slightest age-toning to pages, as is typical with paper dating around the time of the Second World War. Lower corner of dj flap has been price-clipped. First printing of August Derleth"s first collection of his Solar Pons' pastiches of Sherlock Holmes' stories. When August Derleth wrote a letter to Arthur Conan Doyle in 1928 to ask if there were to be more Sherlock Holmes stories, Doyle told him curtly, "No!" Undaunted, young Derleth decided to carry on Doyle's great detective tradition by creating Solar Pons, his early Twentieth century version of Sherlock Holmes. Derleth recreated the detective's companion Dr. Watson as Dr. Lyndon Parker. He also used similar modus operandi for their buddies, Nonetheless, Derleth couldn't help but add a number of original touches, so Pons became more original, while continuing to solve cases a la Sherlock during the 1920's and 30's. Pons was "not so much a 19th century man looking into the 20th, as a 20th century man harkening back to the 19th." Other noteworthy Derleth titles involving Solar Pons and Dr. Parker include: The Memoirs of Solar Pons, Three Problems for Solar Pons, The Return of Solar Pons, The Reminiscences of Solar Pons, and The Adventure of the Orient.
