Invisible Man

By Ellison, Ralph

Even though Ralph Ellison's novel Invisible Man is sometimes featured on banned books lists, it remains a consistent staple on many high school reading curriculums. In the novel, Ellison laments the feeling of hopelessness and invisibility that many Black men experience in the United States, and it elegantly explores the themes of racism and bigotry in ways that are both unsettling and accessible.

First edition identification and notes

Invisible Man was first published in 1952 by Random House for the price of $3.50. The classic dust jacket featured the outline of a man centered in what may be a scope of some kind, contradicting the inherent notion of invisibility. The author's picture is featured on the back dust jacket cover.

True first printings are easy to identify, as the text “First Printing” is clearly visible on the copyright page. Some believe the presence of “A.B” on the bottom of the copyright page is indicative of a first printing, but that text has also been found on other printings as well. So if you believe you have a true first printing of Invisible Man, always check the top of the copyright page for the distinctive “First Printing” text. Additionally, when you remove the dust jacket of first editions, you will see an illustration on the top half and spine of the Random House boards.

Like many Random House first printings, the pricing information of Invisible Man can be found at the top right-hand corner of the inside dust jacket flap. That information may not be included in later printings or subsequent book club editions.

New York: Random House, 1952. First Edition, First Printing. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good in Archival Plastic. A wonderful First Edition, First Printing (so stated) of Ralph Ellison's classic work, signed and dated by the author on the title page, "Ralph Ellison, April 4, 1986." In beige and black cloth with white titling, the book is in near fine condition with a slight lift to the beige cloth on the spine and slight loss of lettering, light spotting on the black topstain and age toning to the pages. But still a solid near fine first with "A.B." on the bottom of the copyright page as required. The very good dustjacket is complete with the original price ($3.50) and the colorful panels as well as the cream panels are bright. There is wear and splitting at the folds and minor loss at the spine ends. Also there is a quarter-size abrasion on the back panel and other minor wear on the dustjacket designed by E. McKnight Kauffer, but still very good. This important book is housed in a beautiful custom clamshell box. In black cloth with tan inserts and glossy cover inset and spine label designed to match the cover of the book. Overall an important edition of a most important book in a beautiful setting.

ELLISON, Ralph

New York: Random House, 1952. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Modest amount of the usual rubbing on the spine, and a few smudges on the boards, near very good lacking the dustwrapper. The front fly bears a full page Inscription to author and longtime *New Yorker* editor, Robert Bingham in the year of publication: "For Bob and Janet Bingham - who understood what is valid and not sheer fantasy of these matters and these adventures before I worked up this sweat. Perhaps this is why we were friends almost on sight. Sincerely, Ralph Ellison. Sept. 1952." Bingham has marked a few passages in the book lightly in pencil, including on the first page: "...because people refuse to see me." Winner of the National Book Award, as well as a *Burgess 99* title. We have handled a few inscribed copies of this title but this is clearly the nicest inscription that we've seen.

E-156: Random House. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. 1952. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Hardcover. 8vo. Random House. 1952. 439 pgs. Ninth Printing. Signed and inscribed by Ralph Ellison on the titile page. DJ has shelf-wear present (chipping present to the spine ends) Bound in decorarted cloth boards. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities Text is free of marks. Binding tight and solid. We rely, in this world, on the visual aspects of humanity as a means of learning who we are. This, Ralph Ellison argues convincingly, is a dangerous habit. A classic from the moment it first appeared in 1952, Invisible Man chronicles the travels of its narrator, a young, nameless black man, as he moves through the hellish levels of American intolerance and cultural blindness. Searching for a context in which to know himself, he exists in a very peculiar state. "I am an invisible man," he says in his prologue. "When they approach me they see only my surroundings, themselves, or figments of their imagination--indeed, everything and anything except me." But this is hard-won self-knowledge, earned over the course of many years. As the book gets started, the narrator is expelled from his Southern Negro college for inadvertently showing a white trustee the reality of black life in the south, including an incestuous farmer and a rural whorehouse. The college director chastises him: "Why, the dumbest black bastard in the cotton patch knows that the only way to please a white man is to tell him a lie! What kind of an education are you getting around here?" Mystified, the narrator moves north to New York City, where the truth, at least as he perceives it, is dealt another blow when he learns that his former headmaster's recommendation letters are, in fact, letters of condemnation. E-156; 6.9 X 4.2 X 1.1 inches; 439 pages; Signed by Author .

Invisible Man

ELLISON, Ralph

New York: The Modern Library, 1992. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Modern Library edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper. Nicely Inscribed (but possibly not signed) by Ellison in a very infirm hand to the daughter of his great friend and fellow author Albert Murray: "For Michele Murray, Who I've known and loved over all the long years, thanks to Michie and Al - Sincerely, Ralphie[?] on my 80th birthday party. March 1, 1994!" Ellison's handwriting is distinctive and this is clearly his, but whether he was operating at full capacity is not clear - almost exactly six weeks later Ellison would be dead. It is possible that instead of "Ralphie" he has written "Michie" again. Along with *Native Son* and *Go Tell It On the Mountain*, one of the three mid-century African-American novels that have entered the Western Canon as acknowledged classics. Winner of the National Book Award, as well as a *Burgess 99* title. *Blockson 101* #86. A wonderful presentation copy, likely among the last that he was to make.

New York: Random House, 1952. First Edition. A very good copy in a good dust jacket. With the ownership signature of novelist Anton Myrer. Laid into this copy is a typed note (”Dear Tony”) on Random House letterhead from editor Albert Erskine (signing in ink as “Albert”) sending him an advance copy of this book (clearly this copy), praising the novel and seeking his opinion. Erskine was an editor, likely editing Myrer’s first book, published the previous year by Random House. Erskine also edited Warren, Welty, Faulkner, Michener and others, but might deserve greatest praise as this novel’s champion.

About this Item: Random House, New York, 1952. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Near fine first edition/first printing in a very good first state dust jacket. Book is near fine, tight and square. Internally the book is unmarked and possible unread. The dust jacket is G/VG with a large chip at the bottom front corner of the spine and a large chip at the top front corner of the spine and minor wear at the extremities. This iconic book in this state is extremely collectible. Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern "American Negro life-1952". It is a strange story , in which many extraordinary things happen , some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. Invisible Man is not only a great triumph of storytelling and characterization; it is a profound and uncompromising interpretation of the "Negro's" anomalous position in American society. Rare and collectible. Additional pictures on request.

Random House. Welcome to our small, family-owned bookstore. Copyright 1947, 1948, 1952 by Ralph Ellison. Published by Random House. Stated First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good for its age. No dust jacket. Cover is black with a light tan cloth overcover on the top third with a black-ink line drawing. Some remnants of fingermarks are on the overcover, but the drawing is clear.
