(Vanderbijlpark: Johan Oosthuizen, 1999). 202 x 148 mm; pictorial wraps; pp. (viii) + 112; maps (including folding); black-and-white photographs. Fine condition. Diaries of Andrew Smit, who was captured in 1900 and sent to Bermuda as a prisoner-of-war. After the Anglo-Boer War ended in 1902, he refused to sign an oath of allegiance to the British government, and accordingly was not released until 1904. The original diaries were in Dutch, the text of this book is an Afrikaans translation with notes. .

It is not generally observed that Anglo-Boer War POWs were held in places such as Bermuda which was, at the time, the second most militarised British territory aside from Gibralter. Housed on Port Island on the Great Sound the prisoners had to sign an Oath of Allegiance to the Crown (an example of which is shown in this book). In Afrikaans throughout these pages are fascinating and in good condition. The cover is tight and sure with light user and shelving wear about the corners and edges.
