JUDE THE OBSCURE

Hardy, Thomas

1896. With an Etching by H. Macbeth-Raeburn and a Map of Wessex. (London:) James R. Osgood, McIlvaine & Co., (1896). Original dark blue-green cloth with front cover monogram device in gilt. First Edition of Hardy's last great novel, issued as Vol. VIII of "The Wessex Novels." Titled HEARTS INSURGENT at the time of its serial appearance, the book was ahead of its time; the depiction of Jude and his cousin Sue settling down together and having two children (though unmarried) was too much for the 1890s public. After TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES (1891) and then JUDE (and due to the outcry over them), Hardy was to spend his remaining 30+ years writing only verse. In this copy, the last pages of chapters are numbered in gatherings "A" through "H" excepting "C" (such pages are never numbered in gatherings "I" onward). In most copies, as here, some but not all of the first eight gatherings have numbered pages, presumably as sheets were gradually altered to conform to the latter part of the book. This is a bright copy, fine except for the merest hint of wear at some corners (two old book descriptions tipped to the front paste-down). Purdy pp 86-91. Housed in a custom cloth slipcase with leather label, and inner chemise. Provenance: bookplate of Henry Walker Bagley [1900-1983] and Nancy Reynolds Bagley [1910-1985], whose Greenwich estate "Quarry Farm" was later owned by Frank Gorshin and then Diana Ross.

HARDY, Thomas (1840-1928), [MACBETH-RAEBURN, H., illustrator]

London: Osgood, McIlvaine and Co., 1896. [Classic Literature] FIRST ONE VOLUME EDITION. Octavo (21 x 15cm), pp.[2]; viii; 516; [2]. With a frontispiece etching by Macbeth-Raeburn, and a map of Wessex at rear. Publisher's dark green cloth with gilt titles to spine and gilt TH monogram to upper board. Top edge gilt; others untrimmed. Armorial bookplate of Lady Anita Theresa Wolseley, daughter of the San Francisco millionaire Daniel Murphy, to front pastedown. Light spotting to endpapers. Very light rubbing and a few marks to boards. A near fine copy. Its savage bleakness marked 'Jude The Obscure' as one of the first modern novels, though the unfavourable reviews following on from the controversy surrounding his previous novel 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles' prevented Hardy attempting another publication in this genre. Thereafter, he would concentrate his efforts on poetry. Purdy pp.86-91. Listed in The Observer's All-Time 100 Best Novels [2003].

Jude the Obscure

Thomas Hardy

"Jude the Obscure" by Thomas Hardy. 1896 1st American Edition; Harper & Brothers; New York. The book contains full-page illustrations. JUDE THE OBSCURE Virginia Woolf called him "the greatest tragic writer among English novelists," but Thomas Hardy was so distressed by the shocked outrage that greeted Jude the Obscure in 1895 that he decided to quit writing novels. For in telling the story of Jude Fawley, whose many attempts to rise above his class are crushed by society or the forces of nature, Hardy had attacked Victorian society's most cherished institutions—marriage, social class, religion, and higher education. A poor villager, Jude Fawley longs to study at the elite University of Christminster, but his ambitions are thwarted by class prejudice—and an earthy country girl who tricks him into marriage by pretending to be pregnant. Entrapped in a loveless marriage, he becomes a stonemason and falls in love with his cousin—the intellectual, free-spirited Sue Bridehead, who is also unhappy in marriage. Sue leaves her husband to live with Jude and eventually bears his children out of wedlock. Their poverty and the weight of society's disapproval begin to take their toll on the couple, forcing them into a shattering downward spiral that ends in one of the most shocking scenes in all of literature. A stunning masterpiece, Jude the Obscure is Hardy's bleakest and most personal novel. Condition: Clean covers and spine; sharp corners; bright gilt lettering and design on the front cover and spine. Tight binding. Crack at hinge between frontispiece and title page. The pages are in excellent condition - clean with no writing, stains, foxing or tears. Trace foxing to long and top edges of the text block. Overall in very good condition.
