KERR, Robert S.

New York: Fleet Publishing Corporation, 1960. Hardcover. Edited by Malvina Stephenson and Tris Coffin. Introduction by Lyndon B. Johnson. 8vo. Yellow cloth, pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. 380pp. Near fine/very good. Mild jacket edgewear. Early (not first) printing of the Oklahoma governor and senator's study of conservation, bearing a choice autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a pristine presidential bookplate signed by Lyndon B. Johnson, who provided the book's introduction. A calligraphic and typewritten inscription reads, "To / Chicago Public Library / With my / best wishes," below which LBJ signs boldly. Accompanied by a photocopy of the original letter of transmittal from LBJ (dated 1971 April 2) sending this copy to Ralph G. Newman, founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop and president of the Chicago Public Library. LBJ notes, "As usual, you have performed in an efficient and effective manner. I think you have done a great public service for your area in establishing an environment and ecology collection in your library and Bob Kerr's book is one which should certainly be in it. I am happy to autograph the enclosed bookplate...." (This is a photocopy of a letter, remember, provided merely as background history for this unique copy.).
