In a Chivers style binding of full painted vellum with ties and added paste paper endpapers, with an elaborate scene on the front cover, and decorative leather hinges laid on. Undated ca. 1923 - with full page and vignette illustrations by Robida. Slight browning, soiling, and warping to vellum, fading to one corner of the cover of volume 2, slight damage to one of the leather hinges. Overall a fine and unique binding. Size: Octavo (8vo). Paris - Les Editions G Cres et Cie, 1900 Two volumes, bound as one, of Honore de Balzac's Les Contes Drolatiques. Illustrated throughout, with numerous colour plates throughout. In the original French. Eight plates to volume I and sixto volume II. All illustrations are by Joseph Hemard, a popular illustrator famous for his erotically naturedillustrations. de Balzac's Contes Drolatiques is a collection of comic talesoriginally published between 1832 and 1837. They are rather reminiscent of Boccaccio's Decameron. His Drolatiques or Droll Tales were originally banned in Canada and Ireland for obscenity. The ban in Ireland was only lifted in 1967. Honore de Balzac was a French novelist and playwright. He isbest known for his novel sequence LaComedie Humaine which presents the reader with a panorama ofpost-Napoleonic France. Condition: In a quarter calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, smart with a small amount of rubbing to the joints and to the head and tail of spine. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, Franz Schader. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges as expected with paper used. The Pages are otherwise clean throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.. Hardcover. VERY GOOD INDEED.

Boards have minor light marks to Vol. I whilst Vol. II has many light marks particularly to rear. Both volumes have a quarter inch nick to head of spine. Internally one page of Vol. II has a small removal to the margin not affecting the text, there is age darkening to endpapers, the occasional spots of light foxing else clean and unmarked. Top edge gilt. Fore and lower edges uncut. Volume I - 351 pages. Volume II - 353 pages. Balzac's magnum opus of novels, short stories and plays which present French life after the fall of Napoleon I in 1815. A founding work of 'Realism' in literature which influenced many writers including Émile Zola, Charles Dickens, Gustave Flaubert, Henry James. La Comédie Humaine remained unfinished at the time of his death in 1850 as Balzac had planned to include more works.
