Moby Dick

By Melville, Herman

Moby-Dick is a classic novel written in 1851 by American author Herman Melville. Originally misunderstood by contemporary audiences and critics, Moby-Dick is now often referred to as "The Great American Novel" and is considered one of the treasures of world literature. The story tells the adventures of the wandering sailor Ishmael and his voyage on the whaleship Pequod, commanded by Captain Ahab.

Moby Dick; Or, The Whale.

Melville, Herman

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1851. First edition of Melville's masterpiece. Octavo, original publisher's brown cloth. A near fine condition with some of the usual light foxing and light shelfwear to the spine tips. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A completely unrestored example of this cornerstone. A superior example. Initially panned by critics and readers when published in 1851, "in the 20th century Moby Dick would be rediscovered and acknowledged as possibly the greatest of all American novels" (Chronology of American Literature). Arguably the greatest single work in American literature, Moby-Dick was initially "a complete practical failure, misunderstood by the critics and ignored by the public; and in 1853 the Harper's fire destroyed the plates of all his books and most of the copies remaining in stock (only about 60 copies of Moby-Dick survived the fire)... [Nevertheless,] Melville's permanent fame must always rest on the great prose epic of Moby-Dick, a book that has no equal in American literature for variety and splendor of style and for depth of feeling" (DAB).

Moby-Dick; or, The Whale

MELVILLE, HERMAN

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1851. First American Edition; preceded slightly by the English edition, although this edition has numerous additions to that text. Publisher’s green cloth; stamped in gilt and in blind; first binding, although this cataloguer has never seen either of the later two bindings in the wild. Some fading and wear; foxed (as seems inevitable); faded contemporary owner’s inscription on the front free endpaper; bookplate of author and collector Carolyn Wells. The final 50 or so leaves are marginally waterstained at the lower corners, far from any text; bottom corners of the three advertising leaves slightly chipped, likewise not near any printing. Overall, a good copy of a book often found repaired, rebacked, restored or otherwise suffering from previous owners’ good or bad intentions. In a custom quarter-morocco clamshell box (corners frayed).

Moby-Dick; or, The Whale.

MELVILLE, Herman.

New York: Harper & Brothers; Richard Bentley, London,, 1851. Duodecimo. Original purple-brown cloth, publisher's devices and rules to each board in blind, titles to spine gilt, orange coated endpapers. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Faint gift inscription ("For Cragin") to title page. Spine darkened to brown, spine ends, edges, and tips a little worn, short split to front hinge at head but text block sound, covers faded with two small marks to front cover, foxing to contents. A very good, unsophisticated copy. First American edition, in the first binding with orange endpapers and the publisher's device stamped centrally on the sides. The American edition was the first to appear under the familiar title and was set from Melville's original manuscript. The Whale, issued a month previously in London, was set from New York sheets, with Melville's alterations. The American edition contains some 35 passages and the epilogue, which were expunged from the English edition.

Moby Dick; Or, The Whale

Melville, Herman

First American Edition. A book with well detailed literary significance. Copies always available, but seldom seen with any sort of additional historical significance. Jim Morrison certainly qualifies as a significant figure, influencing countless artists and fans across the globe to this day. A poetic spirit that made an important mark on Rock n' Roll, he loved reading and often spoke of its power. This copy was with him during his last days in Paris (removed from his flat after his untimely death and kept with his long time girlfriend's family). One can certainly deduce that he handled this copy a fair amount of time and definitely treasured it as a key book in literary history.**** Original publisher's brown cloth, first issue binding complete with 6 pp publisher's ads at rear. Re-backed with original spine laid down, an extra gathering inserted by the original binder, some wear here and there particularly to spine ends, scattered light foxing but overall a very sound, tight copy and remarkably clean inside. Owner signature at front endpaper dated 1890.**** Prettier copies are out there, and even though I live in LA or maybe because I live in LA, I'll take the girl with depth of soul over the ubiquitous superficially attractive ones.*** Why do we pursue such an odd course of action as book collecting? To be the temporary safe keepers of history and something meaningful to our trifling existence. As a friend and all around good guy once told me; it's about the vibrations of history. When you hold this book, you may find it difficult to keep your hands steady. If you're in the market for Moby Dick or generally a flat out cool book, why not pick up a copy owned by someone that had a hell of an influence on millions?

MELVILLE, Herman.

0. MELVILLE, Herman. Moby-Dick; or, the Whale. Original blindstamped blue cloth. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1851. First edition. BAL 13664, second binding without publisher's device. Grolier American, 60. A very good copy, professionally rebacked with original spine expertly laid down, housed in full blue morocco solander case with inner chemise. "Moby-Dick is the great conundrum book. Is it a profound allegory, with the white whale the embodiment of moral evil, or merely the finest story of the sea ever written? Whichever it is, now rediscovered, it stirs and stimulates each succeeding generation, whether reading it for pleasure or with a scalpel. Within its pages can be found the sounds and scents, the very flavor, of the maritime life of our whaling ancestors"--Grolier.

MELVILLE, Herman

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1851. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Original pebble-grained red cloth with gilt spine lettering and blind-embossed rules and front board publisher's device. xxiii, 635pp, (6pp ads). Good plus. Internally a sound "Very good," as it's internally tight and unrestored, showing only mild sporadic age toning and occasional light foxing; binding is sound and decent, with exposed tips; somewhat rough spine has had 1" X 1" excision archivally and discretely restored and chipped spine head and tail archivally rebuilt (see images); pencilled 1852 ownership signature on inner flyleaf. A tight, presentable and quite handleable first U.S. edition, first issue, of this giant of 19th century literature. One of only 3000 U.S. copies, the American edition -- preceded by the 2-volume English version one month prior -- met with little fanfare, and supposedly many unsold copies were destroyed in an 1854 warehouse fire. Original terra cotta endpapers. Despite wear this is a respectable copy, appropriately priced. BAL 13664.

Moby-Dick; or, The Whale

MELVILLE, Herman

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1851. First Edition. Hardcover. A firm, unsophisticated copy of Melville's masterpiece, preceded by a three-volume London edition a month earlier. The American edition was 3000 copies, but the book sold poorly, and many unsold copies were reputedly destroyed in a warehouse fire in 1854. BAL 13664. GROLIER AMERICAN 60. Octavo (19cm); Blanck's first binding of slate A cloth with embossed circular publisher's device to front and rear boards; [i-xxiv], [1]-[635] + 6pp. publisher's ads. Original orange-coated endpapers. A good, unrestored copy. Spine has faded to tan, with consequent dulling to gilt; small losses to cloth at spine ends, joints and board edges, with one small, old inexpert repair to cloth at base of spine. Front free endpaper with a ca. 1/2" abrasion, apparently the result of an ill-advised erasure, which has further suffered an undignified later attempt at re-coloring. Scattered foxing within, but text generally fresh and tight. Bookplate of Miriam Dyer-Bennett to front pastedown. In custom morocco and marbled paper clamshell box.
