Of Human Bondage

By Maugham, W Somerset

Of Human Bondage is a novel by W. Somerset Maugham. It is generally agreed to be his masterpiece and to be strongly autobiographical in nature, although Maugham stated, "This is a novel, not an autobiography, though much in it is autobiographical, more is pure invention. " Maugham, who had originally planned to call his novel Beauty from Ashes, finally settled on a title taken from Spinoza's Ethics

First edition identification and notes

Of Human Bondage.

MAUGHAM, W. Somerset.

1915. London: William Heinemann, 1915. 8vo., original blue cloth lettered in gilt on spine and upper board; [viii], 648; usual browning to endpapers, gilt on spine slightly dulled, otherwise a very good copy in contemporary cloth chemise and leather backed slipcase (a little rubbed and worn). First UK edition signed by the author on front-free endpaper. The coming-of-age story is based around the life of Philip Carey, a sensitive young man consumed by an unrequited and self-destructive love. Born with a clubfoot, Philip is orphaned as a child and raised by unsympathetic relatives. He is sent to a boarding school where he has difficulty fitting in, and grows up with an intense longing for love, art, and experience. After failing to become an artist in Paris, he begins medical studies in London, where he meets Mildred, a cold-hearted waitress with whom he falls into a powerful, tortured, life-altering love affair. The novel is generally agreed to be Maugham's masterpiece and to be strongly autobiographical in nature, with Philip’s malformed foot standing in for Maugham’s stutter, and the character’s painful romantic struggles inspired by the author’s own intense love affairs with both men and women. However, Maugham has also stated that "This is a novel, not an autobiography, though much in it is autobiographical, more is pure invention."(Barr, 1957). Maugham, who had originally planned to call the novel Beauty from Ashes, finally settled on a title taken from a section of Spinoza's Ethics. The Modern Library ranked Of Human Bondage No. 66 on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.

Of Human Bondage (Original screenplay for the 1946 film, presentation copy belonging to actress Alexis Smith)

Maugham, W. Somerset (novel); Edmund Goulding (director); Catherine Turney (screenwriter); Eleanor Parker, Paul Henreid, Alexis Smith (starring)

Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1944. Second Revised Final script for the 1946 film. Presentation copy belonging to actress Alexis Smith, with her initials in decorative gilt on the front board, bound in full calf. Throughout the script are 5 black-and-white film stills on tipped-in leaves, all featuring Smith and costar, Paul Henreid. Based on W. Somerset Maugham's classic 1915 novel, about a forlorn artist in France who gives up the trade to become a doctor. Philip Cary (Henreid), the artist, meets Mildred Rogers (Eleanor Parker), a waitress, and becomes dreadfully infatuated, in spite of the waitress' complete disregard for him. Eventually the waitress' charms wane and Cary reconnects with a beautiful young writer, Nora Nesbitt (Smith), and their romance flourishes-until Mildred Rogers returns, pregnant and in need. First adapted to film in 1934, directed by John Cromwell, and starring Leslie Howard and Bette Davis, the novel was also adaptated in 1964 by Ken Hughes, starring Kim Novak and Laurence Harvey, and has been adapted several times for television. Brown full sheepskin boards with gilt titles. Distribution page present, receipt intact. Title page present, dated 6/22/44, with credits for screenwriter Turney. 179 leaves including black and white publicity photos bound in, mimeograph, with blue revision pages throughout, dated 8/12/44 and 8/29/44. Of Human Bondage (Original screenplay for the 1946 film, script editor's copy)

Maugham, W. Somerset (novel); Edmund Goulding (director); Catherine Turney (screenwriter); Paul Henreid, Eleanor Parker, Alexis Smith, Edmund Gwenn (starring)

Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1944. Second Revised Final Draft script for the 1946 film. Copy belonging to the film's editor Clarence Kolster, with his name in holograph pencil on the first revision page, and annotations throughout, mostly noting cut (or completed) scenes. Actress Bette Davis' name on the front wrapper in holograph pencil, though Davis was the lead role in the earlier 1934 John Cromwell version. This second film version of W. Somerset Maugham's classic novel stars Paul Henreid as a clubfooted medical student. Eleanor Parker is Mildred, the vulgar cockney waitress adored by Philip Carey (Henreid). The subject matter of Maugham's novel, exploring how sexual obsession can lead to ruin, was missing in the 1946 version thanks to studio censors, and Alexis Smith, who played the second female lead, said the remake should never have been produced. Orange titled wrappers, noted as 2nd REV FINAL on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 40, dated June 22, 1944. Distribution page present, with receipt removed. Title page present, dated 6/22/44, with a credit for screenwriter Turney. 169 leaves, with last page of text numbered 219 (several pages omitted). MAUGHAM, W. SOMERSET

Garden City: Garden City Publishing Company, (1934). Motion picture tie-in edition with a wonderful pictorial wraparound band. This book was issued to coincide with the release of the 1934 John Cromwell directed film version of the novel starring Leslie Howard, Bette Davis, Frances Dee, Kay Johnson, Reginald Denny, Alan Hale, and Reginald Owen. The wraparound band is four and a half inches wide and illustrated with black & white still photographs from the film. Across the top of the front panel portion is printed: “W. SOMERSET MAUGHAM’S GREAT NOVEL from which the LESLIE HOWARD Picture was taken - 766 Pages - THE COMPLETE STORY.” The photographs on the front panel portion is a collage of scenes showing Leslie Howard twice in three photographs with Bette Davis and Frances Dee. On the spine portion is a large close-up portrait of Leslie Howard’s head. The book, itself, is a very good copy with some flaking to the gilt-stamping in a very good dust jacket with some chipping (mostly at head of spine), some tears, and some edge creasing. The dust jacket is yellow and has a quote from Theodore Dreiser “It sings, it has color. It has rapture. In viewing it one finds nothing to criticize or regret.” Very scarce in this form.
