Tan boards with tan writing surrounded by orange block on spine; book has lean to right where binding has pulled away between front board and first interior page. Top and bottom of book spine rumpled; bottom corner of front board bumped. Pieces missing from front dust jacket where it meets spine, top and bottom of dust jacket spine, and back dust jacket top and lower corner where it meets spine. Dust jacket spine also cracked from top to bottom; folds of dust jacket to flaps also missing small pieces. Aside from binding issue mentioned, rest of book has tight binding and pages still look in excellent condition. Corners of front and back dust jacket flaps clipped, but price of $2.00 still shows on front dust jacket fold. "Second Printing" appears at bottom of front dust jacket flap and "Second Printing, January 1937" appears on copyright page; line 21 on page 9 reads "loosely".
This second printing happened a few weeks after the book was first published, also in January 1937, fixing typographical errors found in first printing. Steinbeck's classic about two men trying to maintain their friendship and live in the Great Depression. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. Common to this edition, the spine is quite sunned compared to the dark green half cloth, but gilt lettering remains bright. A pinpoint speck to the front cover's paper. The slipcase has minor wear to corners, the tail is bumped.; Sir Walter Scott's arguably best short story of the rough life of two cattle drivers in Scotland, privately printed in celebration of his bicentennial birthday. Copy 242 of an edition of 680 and signed on the colophon by Coleman O. Parsons who wrote an extensive Foreword for this edition. Frontispiece is a fanciful lion with spread claws, printed in red. The front pastedown bears a portrait of Scott, but I'm partial to the frontis, instead. Text block trimmed at the head edge. Printed by Meriden Gravure on Hale Paper's mould-made rag paper designed by F. T. Jackson and bearing a facsimile of Sir Walter Scott's signature of 1827. Bound by A.…
