On Her Majesty's Secret Service

By Fleming, Ian

A Lancia Spyder with its hood down tore past him, cut in cheekily across his bonnet and pulled away, the sexy boom of its twin exhausts echoing back at him. It was a girl driving, a girl with a shocking pink scarf tied round her hair. And if there was one thing that set James Bond really moving, it was being passed at speed by a pretty girl.

When Bond rescues a beautiful, reckless girl from self-destruction, he finds himself with a lead on one of the most dangerous men in the world—Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the head of SPECTRE. In the snow-bound fastness of his Alpine base, Blofeld is conducting research that could threaten the safety of the world. To thwart the evil genius, Bond must get himself and the vital information he has gathered out of the base and keep away from SPECTRE's agents.

ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE

FLEMING, Ian:

London: Jonathan Cape. 1963. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Inscribed presentation copy. Publisher's original black cloth with white ski track design to upper board, titles in gilt to the spine, in the Richard Chopping illustrated dustwrapper. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm with a little bumping at the spine tips. The contents with a few spots of foxing to the top edge of the text block are otherwise clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed and nicked original dustwrapper which is a little toned to the spine and rear panel. Not price-clipped (16s net to the front flap). Inscribed by the author in blue ink on the front free endpaper "To Aubrey / who wrote some of it! / From Ian". Provenance: Aubrey Forshaw, Managing Director of Pan Books, publisher of the James Bond novels in paperback and Ian Fleming's expert for technical information concerning James Bond's cars. It was in this respect that he was asked by Fleming to read the proof of On Her Majesty's Secret Service and correct any errors. Forshaw duly obliged, making corrections in several places and returning the proof to the publisher. All of his emendations were adopted to the first edition text, hence the wonderful presentation inscription to his friend and collaborator. An outstanding association copy of the tenth James Bond novel. (Gilbert A11a). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Fleming, Ian

London: Jonathan Cape, 1963. First edition of the eleventh novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by Ian Fleming on the front free endpaper. From the library of Francis Cory-Wright, with a loosely inserted typescript card, signed "Robin" and dated 1 July 1963, by Robin De La Lanne-Mirrlees. Lanne-Mirrlees, Rouge Dragon Pursuivant at the College of Arms, assisted Fleming with research for On Her Majesty's Secret Service, providing heraldic and genealogy information on Bond, and being an inspiration for Bond's cover as a College of Arms researcher in the novel. Lanne-Mirrlees claimed descent from an ancient Basque family, whose members were said to be born without earlobes. Fleming gave this unusual deformity to Blofeld. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A superior example with noted provenance. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is the eleventh novel in the James Bonds series and the first since the debut of the Bond film. It became "an immediate bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic" (Biondi & Pickard, 48). "By the time of publication, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service had received nearly a quarter more subscriptions than any previous Fleming novel" (Lycett, 419). George Lazenby starred in the 1969 film version, with Diana Rigg as Tracy and Telly Savalas as Blofeld.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service

Fleming, Ian

London: Jonathan Cape, 1963 First edition, third printing. Signed and inscribed to front free endpaper: "To / The Good Samaritans / from / Ian Fleming." Publisher's dark gray cloth, stamped in white to front board with ski-track motif, lettered in metallic silver to spine; in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Richard Chopping with an illustration of a pair of artist's hands drawing the Bond family coat of arms. A near fine copy with a slight lean to spine, previous owner's inscription to front free endpaper above Fleming's inscription; in a very good or better dust jacket with toning and light wear to extremities, half-inch tear to spine head at rear fold, shallow chipping to outer corners. Overall, a nice copy, scarce with the author's signature. Gilbert A11a (3). On Her Majesty's Secret Service is Fleming's second novel featuring the malicious spy organization SPECTRE and its villainous leader Ernst Stavro Blofeld, first introduced in the ninth novel, Thunderball (1961). At the start of this novel, Bond is depressed in the wake of Operation Thunderball and struggling to follow up on Blofeld, whose trail has gone cold. Popularly known as a permanent bachelor, Bond surprises the reader by marrying the young daughter of a powerful crime boss. Just when things are beginning look up for 007, Blofeld returns to murder the new bride in a drive-by shooting that devastates Bond. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is a truly unique portrayal of the emotional side of James Bond; this is accentuated in the film version starring George Lazenby, the only actor to play Bond just once.. Illus. by Chopping, Richard. Inscribed by Author. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

1963 First Edition / First State (Jonathan Cape Ltd)Superb Original Unclipped Dust Jacket A fabulous example first edition / first state with unclipped original Richard Chopping designed dust jacket; the correct version for the first edition. The book is in very good + to NF condition; black clothed hardback cover, white tram line motif on front board andsilver lettering on the spine. There are no major issues to the cover other than some minor bumpingat spine ends and a patch a very faint sunning on edge of front board. The interior is similarly excellent with the one point of note is some staining to leaf ends which are noticeable when book is closed. Otherwise endpapers and leafs clean, unmarked and very white. No age related issues. There is a very small blue ink price on ffep. The dust jacket is in very good - near fine condition and comes with protective clear cover. The colours retain an excellent vibrancy and there is only the merest hint of any sunning seen at spine. There is some very minor chipping at spine foot and a tiny bit of rubbing at top. These are really small issues. The jacket is clean, clearand unmarked and free of creasing. The inside flap shows a price of 16s. net. and the rear has a list of Fleming novels to "The Spy Who Loved Me." This is a really good example first edition and really the only issue of real note is the staining markson the leaf ends which can be seen in the photos. 288 pages - octavo
