ASHEVILLE, NC - October 4rd, 2005 - Biblio.com, an online marketplace for used, rare, out-of-print, and hard-to-find books, participated in the new study commissioned by the Book Industry Study Group, Inc. (BISG) The report released on September 28th, at the BISG annual meeting in New York, stated that the used book business in the United States topped $2.2 billion in sales and over 111 million books in 2004. Used books sales now represent 8.4% of total consumer spending on books.

Along with many of the other established online book marketplaces, Biblio.com provided data for the study. Brendan Sherar, CEO of Biblio.com Inc. said, "We have been aware for some time about the marketability of used books online, and with a study like this being conducted by BISG, we now have some solid data to substantiate it. The study is vital to the success and recognition of the independent bookseller as well."

Making it in the online book trade isn't always an easy path, and the independent used bookstores provide a majority of used book inventory to the marketplace. Sites like Biblio.com provide another outlet for booksellers to sell their products to a virtual customer base of millions of online shoppers. Many of the larger sites have made the shopping experience lack transparency, so that the customer is essentially purchasing from the large company that owns the website. Biblio.com is one of the few sites in the used book arena that is maintaining transparency in the transactional process, so the customer knows who is really selling them the book they are interested in.

"Recent changes in the online bookselling world, like Amazon.com changing how they deal with bulk sellers on their site, show that there is a need for accountability in our market, which means better sellers and better books will ultimately fair well and grow our industry," says Kevin Donaldson, Director of Sales and Marketing for Biblio.com.

Biblio.com
Biblio.com Inc. is now one of the leading sources for used, rare, out-of-print, and hard-to-find books in the world. With the launch of their online services in February 2003, Biblio.com entered a market dominated by several major companies, as well as more than a dozen smaller competitors. With substantial growth in the last two years, Biblio.com has gone from a fledgling company to becoming the third largest site of its kind in the world. Biblio.com now offers more than 25 million titles from 3500 independent booksellers in 29 countries.
