LANIER, Sidney (1842-1881)

Philadelphia / London: J. B. Lippincott & Co, 1877. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Fine. First Printing, State A (with blind-stamped circular device on lower cover) of this collection from "one of the finest poets produced by the South in the nineteenth century." (Poetry Foundation) Small, slim 8vo (173 x 109mm) 94pp. Original terra-cotta C cloth stamped in gilt, covers beveled. Attractive, discreet book label and signature of Princess Amélie Rives Troubetzkoy (1863-1945), American author of novels, poetry, and plays. A superlative copy, virtually pristine inside and out. BAL 11249. Fullerton, pp. 173-75. Sidney Clopton Lanier, called poet of the Confederacy, was the "first important figure in the literature of the new South and a scion of the old aristocratic regime." His theories of poetry, expounded in his Science of English Verse, shared much with Poe's. "He conceived music to be the basis of all poetic writing, and his own work contains some almost flawless examples of harmonies expression. 'Corn' [included in this collection] and 'The Marches of Glynn' are two of the fine poems in American literature." (Fullerton) "The Symphony,"also in this collection, "gave speaking parts to the instruments of the orchestra, deriving ingenious musical effects through his manipulations of alliteration, assonance, rhyme, and meter. The poem provides each of his 'instruments' with a special tone color created by rhythm and sound devices. . . . The last voice, that of the bassoon, utters Lanier's most famous line, implicit in every line in the poem, "Music is Love in search of a word." (Poetry Foundation) In 1896, Amélie Rives married Prince Pierre Troubetzkoy, an artist and aristocrat, after Oscar Wilde introduced them in London. N. B.
