First edition, first impression, of the analytical philosopher's exploration of epistemology and the philosophy of science - a revision of his influential John Dewey Lectures of 1970, with one greatly expanded and two further essays added. Loosely inserted is a typed letter from Ayer to fellow philosopher Daniel J. O'Connor (1914-2012), regarding the publication of the second edition of the latter's biography of John Locke, as well as his receipt of purchase of the book at Dillon's University Bookshop in London. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Top edge a little sunned, else a fine copy in good jacket, toned, with two closed tears at head of rear panel.
