Quality Street a Comedy in Four Acts

J. M. Barrie

ont> Hodder & Stoughton : London, 1901 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). A limited edition copy of J. M. Barrie's play 'Quality Street', illustrated with colour plates throughout by Hugh Thomson, signed by the artist. A limited edition work, limited to one thousand copies, this one numbered one-hundred and four. Signed by the artist to the edition page. 'Quality Street' is a play written by J. M. Barrie. The play follows two sisters, Phoebe and Susan, as they start a school for 'genteel children', as they try and get the attention of an old suitor who went away to war. The play was written before Barrie's famous 'Peter Pan', and it opened on Broadway in 1901, with the cast including Seymour Hicks, Ellaline Terriss, Marion Terry, and Irene Rooke. J. M. Barrie is best known for his work 'Peter Pan', who was inspired to write the novel by the Llewelyn Davies boys. His other works, including this play, were popular, but often overshadowed by the success of 'Peter Pan'. With a colour frontispiece, and twenty-one colour plates. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson. Thomson was an Irish illustrator, who did pen-and-ink illustrations for editions of works by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie. Collated, complete. Condition: In the original publisher's vellum binding with gilt decoration to the boards and spine. Externally, generally smart. Light marks and discolouration to the boards and spine, as is usual with vellum binding. Light spots to the spine. Lacking the ribbon tie to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed.

QUALITY STREET A Comedy in Four Acts

BARRIE, J. M., Illustrated by Hugh Thomson

London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited, ND [1913]. Hardcover. Hugh Thomson colour plates. pp. vii, 198. Thick 4to. Bound in ornately gilt and silver decorated plum cloth. The cloth boards are a bit scuffed, with minor wear to the edges of the boards, and a bit more wear to the joints (which are still tight). There is some minor foxing to the endpapers, but there are no previous owners' signatures, and the hinges are tight. The contents are clean and tight, with some minor foxing to the foredges. Now encased in clear, protective, mylar, and still in good, to very good, condition. Charmingly illustrated with pictorial endpapers, line drawings and 22 tipped-in colour plates with captioned tissue guards. This is the first trade edition, identical in size, format and contents to the limited edition (which was bound in vellum). Barrie also wrote 'The Admirable Crichton', which premiered in 1902, the same year as 'Quality Street'. This copy is unique due to the ink inscription, on the half-title page, which reads: ''The Admirable Crichton' / Producer - Miss Rosie / As a token of appreciation & as a suggestion for the future / from W. Hulme(?) Lever / Gladstone Hall, Port Sunlight, March 8th, 1924.' The 'Lever' being, no doubt a descendent of William Hesketh Lever, the soap baron, who founded Port Sunlight (near Liverpool) in the 1880s, as a location for his soap factories and workers' cottages.
