Description:
1853 Life of Blessed Virgin Mary Orsini English Catholic Ireland IllustratedA beautiful, rare English edition of Orsini's 'Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary.' This fine work of Catholic literature was translated out of the original French into English and is "a labor of love for a Catholic to celebrate the praises and publish the renown of our most dear Mother." Called a 'Superb Work' by the Lambruschini 'Treatise on the Immaculate Conception', this work was written to honor the Virgin Mary and hold her in the highest regard. Translated by Mrs. J Sadlier, this work "follows the course of the universal devotion wherewith the Church has honored, and does still honor, this Queen of angels and of men. It shows how from age to age that devotion has grown and prospected coequal with Catholicity and records the shrines and churches erected in every land under her invocation. It embodies the Eastern traditions concerning her with the conclusive testimony of the Fathers; the little which is related of her in… Read More

1874 1ed Mivart Man & Apes DARWIN EVOLUTION Zoology Illustrated Gorilla Catholic

A first American edition account of George Mivart's reaction to Darwinian naturalism.

George Mivart was a 19th-century English biologist known for his attempts to merge the beliefs of Darwinian evolution and the Catholic Church – curiously, he was condemned by everyone! Mivart held views that were contrary to other scientists, including his view on the language of animals – he states:
"Since we are unable to converse with brutes, we can but divine and infer from their gestures, motions, and the sounds they emit, what may be the nature of their highest psychical powers."
Mivart discounted many of Darwin's own studies including his "hasty attribution of human qualities to brutes, on account of certain superficial resemblances." (Radick, p.69).
According to Cooper and Hull,
"Mivart describes primates, including humans, as being 'unguiculate, claviculate, placental mammals, with orbits encircled by bone; three kinds of… Read More

Description:
1807 1ed Noah WEBSTER Dictionary English Language American School ed Grammar
Rare first edition of Webster's famous school dictionary!
The name 'Webster' has become synonymous with dictionary over the last century. Noah Webster sought to create a purely 'American' culture that was independent of British claim, he achieved this by creating this dictionary – a work that helped distance American grammar and linguistics from that of Britain.
According to the 'Printing of the Mind of Man',
"This dictionary, which almost at once became, and has remained, the standard English dictionary in the United States, was the end-product of a stream of spelling books, grammars, readers, and dictionaries which flowed from the pen of the industrious Noah Webster. Webster's great dictionary, all the 70,000 entries of which he wrote with his own hand, has been reprinted and brought up to date innumerable times. The book marked a definite advance in modern lexicography, as it included many non-literary terms and paid… Read More

Thirteen of volumes are from the 1899 first edition publication. The remaining twelve volumes span the years 1901 - 1909. Condition of each book varies from Good to Very Good+. Pages on all the volumes are clear, without marks and overall without foxing (with only a few exceptions which have some light foxing). Book spines are all in good to excellent condition.
