The cover of this book has much wear. A binding was added later as well as pads for the corner's of the book. the previous owners names are written on the inside of the front cover and on the top of the third blank page. The pages are yellowing and tanning. The edges of most of the pages are worn. This is a complete, uniform, set of the 25 volume Author's National Edition. However, all the volumes are not first editions from the 1899 publication by Harper and Brothers. Thirteen of volumes are from the 1899 first edition publication. The remaining twelve volumes span the years 1901 - 1909. Condition of each book varies from Good to Very Good+. Pages on all the volumes are clear, without marks and overall without foxing (with only a few exceptions which have some light foxing). Book spines are all in good to excellent condition. We could not find any tears on pages except for a tear on the second page of volume xx (the page with the author's lithographed signature). All have a varied amount of shelf wear at the top and bottom of the spines. Otherwise shelf wear is very slight. Some have slight age toning. 1860 Arctic Boat Journey Isaac Hayes Exploration 2nd Grinnell Expedition KANE

Henry Grinnell's second arctic expedition was a 19th-century Elisha Kent Kane voyage which, in 1853, set out to find John Franklin and his lost expedition. Kane, along with other crew on the USS Advance never found Franklin but were able to gather a lot of information about people, geography, and natural history of the Arctic region, a relatively unknown region of the world. The discoveries found on this voyage include the Humboldt Glacier, Kennedy Channel, the Kane Basin, and reaching the farthest north of any exploration at the time.

Expedition surgeon Isaac Hayes published his own account of the voyage, published under the title "An Arctic Boat Journey".
