Three volumes, complete with half titles, volume short titles, and original preliminary and final blanks (two preliminary blanks in Vol 1). A tall copy, pages 7 5/8" tall, all edges deckled and uncut. Very small old library discard stamp on each title, no other marks. Bound in late 20th century red morocco over very attractive marbled paper, with unusually thick boards (5/16"), and new endpapers. A fine set.

New York: Charles L. Webster and Co., 1891. This antique hardcover first edition is bound in gray pictorial boards, with red and black lettering and a cover illustration showing a man and three little devils. Spine lettering and decorations are gilt. Some cover soil, edgewear; some wear to spine; inner pages very slightly browned; mostly a clean, tight copy. Translated by Adolphus Norraikow, the book contains a short note by the translator, and three short stories: "Ivan the Fool," "A Lost Opportunity" and "Polikushka." 172 pages; approx. 5"x7".. First Edition. Hard Cover. Collectible-Good. Illus. by Valerian Gribayedoff.

Appleton and Company, New York, 1857, first US edition; 2 vols, 12mo, pp viii, 285 and viii, 269; pp 12 (but paginated 14) catalogue of Appleton publications divided between the two volumes at the end; original brown cloth gilt, lilac end papers, recased with later blue free end paper at the front on vol I; engraved frontispiece of Bronte to volume I and of Haworth church and parsonage to volume II; spines dulled and frayed at the edges and ends, internally slightly browned at the extreme edges of the pages but otherwise clean; back hinge of volume 1 a little weak but binding generally tight and firm; ownership inscription dated 1858 in each volume; despite the flaws described this is a still a reasonable copy of the first US edition, published shortly after the book appeared in the UK.

First authorised American edition. Gilt decorations and titling to upper cover and gilt titling to back strip. t.e.g. Neat name in ink on bottom of front free end-paper. Cloth a little rubbed at extremities and spine sl. darkened o/w a tight clean copy internally very good.

1864 Ingoldsby Legends Occult Esoteric Tenniel Leech Cruikshank Illustrated ART

"ABRACADABRA!"

A beautiful and attractive 1864 printing of the famous "Ingoldsby Legends." This collection of myths, ghost stories, and poetry was written by R.H. Barham, who is better known by his penname, Thomas Ingoldsby. These legends were extremely popular from their inception in 1837, but this edition was illustrated with 60 George Cruikshank illustrations! While this collection is less popular today than it was in the 19th-century, it does include aspects that are still recognizable – the magic command "Abracadabra" and a version of the children's song Bingo!
