Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1884. Very Thick Quarto. xxxiv, errata, first part 757pp., second part 759-1009pp. Includes 40 textural woodcuts, 132 extraordinary full page plates (which often are lacking) of which three are double paged and three are folding all with descriptive over leafs. This work is designed to present figures and descriptions of the vast number of species of vertebrates of all classes, but more especially of the mammals of the Tertiary lake-basins of the American West. This was the first time a paleontologist has been able to present a complete and wide-ranging work on the Tertiary period of the Western region. Besides including extinct orders, suborders and families, it has an incredible bearing on evolution (as George Gaylord Simpson was later to note). It took over a year for the Federal bindery to prepare the collations and binding of the massive volume (it weighs just under 15 pounds. It was initially reviewed in the Naturalist which noted that is was a… Read More

Warm Springs (1944-47). 84 photographs, also included are: 13 paintings of patients being fitted for body casts, water therapy and the ever present wheel chairs. Albert Gold's paintings are also in the Smithsonian, the Philadelphia College of Art and many museums. The most interesting are the photographs of the Dedication of the Little White House after FDR's death. The photograph of Grant Jackson's singing there is dated June 1947. The photographs are much clearer than those published in the Atlanta Constitution on June 26, 1947. Laid in is a 20 page booklet "The Story of the Warm Springs Foundation" which not only features President Franklin Delano Roosevelt but lists all the Medical Doctors, Therapists, and administrators. (Program laid in June 20, 1947 with Josephus Daniels, Secretary of Navy, and other dignitaries with Graham Jackson presenting a medley of Franklin D. Roosevelt's favorite songs. Description:
Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution, 1891. Limited Edition. Quarto. After Gray's death, the 23 plates were thought to have been lost but had been carelessly stored in his sprawling house. These surviving plates (total in all the few known complete copies) were expertly drawn by Isaac Sprague. They have survived as fine chromolithographic plates (2 folding). The Smithsonian then issued them in portfolio format in an edition of 300 copies. The plates as in all auction copies are numbered 1-4, 8, 10, 20, 25, 27, 30, 31, 34, 35, 39, 40, 41, 46-50, 52, 63. The orignal title page as well as an introduction by Samuel P. Langley, who was Secretary of the Smithsonian, were mounted and laid in. Our copy collates the same as the Smithsonian copy (other copies have images sometimes reversed, possibly due to a binder's error; a few on OCLC appear to be missing plates). The last copies to appear at auction were in the early 1990's and typically brought between $2,000 to $4,000 even with stated imperfections.… Read More
