About This Item

London, [1873-1876]: Virtue & Company. Folio. These are the complete original parts issued over a four year period to subscribers. (A later issue was published in New York by Virtue and Yorston). All fifty-six parts are present with each complete with the plates as issued.. [Volumes 1-50 the Works, Vol. 1-6 as William Shakespeare: a biography. The collation is the same as that of the Folger Library which was bound into two large folio volumes. (see Flat PR2755.k7 Z3c. Sh. Col.). Complete sets with each illustration in steel are unknown (Vol. 49-50 provided instruction so either Virtue & Company or the subscriber's personal binder could bind them to the collector's preference). George Knight spent over four decades in trying to find the most authentic engravings on Shakespeare's plays. These are the culmination of his monumental efforts with each plate nearly pristine and lacking the foxing that appears on some copies. Bound in original pink wrappers, edge chipped on some, one of the biographies lacks front wrapper and another lacks half of a front wrapper. A very good set.
