Description:
London. the leather is Very Slightly rubbed, gold motif on each corner is in ver good condition; 5 raised bands on spine with gilt lineations; skiver with title on spine is dull. 2 bookplates and a dealer's sticker on front paste-down. There is a moderate amount of foxing on the eps and the verso to the first map in the series. This copy has no title page, which appears to be standard - I imagine because it was included on Vol ! only. So no definite printing date can be given. The last date in the text is 1853. Mendelssohn (S A Bib) on p988 lists the book as "The British Colonies, Division VII and printing date 1851, but he probably took the date from Vol 1. Frontis of Sir Ralph Abercromby, 1734-1801, hero of Aboukir Bay 1801; with tissue guard; 208pp with tables; 5 double page col maps with vignettes, all unfoxed and very frame-able : Africa; Cape Colony; Natal and Kaffraria; Western Africa; Islands of the Atlantic, with lovely engravings of landscapes by J Rankin (and others). All maps… Read More
