Los Angeles: Bruce McCallister, 1931. Landacre, Paul. Quarto. (x), (ii)pp., + 14 plates. One of 500 copies, signed by Landacre. Foreword by Arthur Miller. Published during a period that saw a renaissance in woodcuts and wood engravings, this marks Landacre's first original publication. Originally from Ohio, Landacre discovered the beauty of the California landscape while convalescing from a strep infection. Entirely self-taught, his engravings are noted for their fine lines that evoke a sense of drama and movement; those qualities are abundantly present in this group of fourteen full-page engravings and colophon vignette, all pulled from the original blocks by Harold Young. This book was one of AIGA's Fifty Books of the Year. A fragile book that is frequently dismantled for its plates, this is a fine copy in patterned boards which show a trace of wear to lower corners and spine ends, and light toning to extremities. Housed in a cloth slipcase with leather lettering piece on front panel.
