Description:
London: Adam and Charles Black, 1911. The provenence of this antiquarian volume is what makes this book unique. Pasted to the inside cover is the bookplate of Louis Agassiz Shaw, co-inventor (along with Philip Drinker) of the iron lung in 1928. 394 lightly tanned pages followed by several pages of publisher advertisements. Some rubbing wear to maroon cover. We noted some red pencil marks to equations on page 175. Some mild foxing to endpapers. A poor quality rubber cement repair has been made to inside cover and title page, so residue is visible on the seams of those pages and title page does not open flat. Shaw bookplate has caused a darkened area the shape of the bookplate, paste residue on bookplate. Small green stamp on fep, penciled price, penciled price on page v. Rubber cement residue on inside seem of back cover. Small blemish on back cover. New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 1934. Stated First Edition 8vo size navy blue cloth bound hardcover with bright gilt titles on cover (faded titles on spine.) 223 unmarked pages. The book is divided into three parts with multiple chapters: The Ways of Leisure Exploring Our Environment Taking Stock of Ourselves From Introduction "Almost overnight a new idea has come to us. It is the recognition that we are to have more time to live our lives as we please. Hitherto, in a world of scarcity, we have had to give our hostages to toil. Now, in an age of plenty, we can look forward to an increasing amount of time that is our own. We have, to an extent, grown work-wise. In the future, we shall grow leisure-wise. While we shall doubtless learn to put more dignity into work and to make it a fulfillment rather than a depletion, nevertheless, in our leisure, we shall find the means for cultivating the interest, powers and delights that should be our human privilege. This book is a frontier… Read More

This family figures prominently in early American genealogy and history. 359 tanned pages followed by index.
